Finally got to go on an adventure with my adventure bike. I was on vacation where there was some non paved road surface. I learned many things. Either I suck at riding off road or I brought a knife tire to a gun tire fight. I found the gravel was sliding my wheels all over the place and the really deep gravel was terrifying. Also soft sand was pretty bad, but I wasn't too surprised at that. Anyways, here are some pictures from around the Fanning Springs area of FL.

What you experienced is natural.
Some roads and trails terrified me at first. 1 year later I was blasting down those same roads and trails at full speed.
You will get used to it, build skill, learn to control and become a much stronger rider for it.
Congrats on the first adventure ride. Don't ever stop.

All about finding the right mixture of tire and pressure for the surface, and figuring out the technique to make it happen at speed. And holding your line, turning moreso rather than banking. Some surfaces like dumped pea gravel will always be sketchy--the ideal tire for easy control for that stuff is a 4" MTB knobbie.

Threw on the knobbies (40c Clement MSOs) and a dirt drop bar(Salsa Cowchipper 40cm) on the CAADX commuter and had to go test it on some local single track. Was able to keep up with some full suspension MTB newbies!

I hope it's OK to continue sharing my non-gravel rides done on my gravel bike. There are some really nice paved bike paths here and anything approaching "gravel" is a hiking path covered with 1-2" stones.
I road to Yad Kennedy (JFK Memorial) on Father's Day weekend. It's in the south of Jerusalem perched high up on a hill. Only a 20 mile roundtrip but the hills were killer!
'The memorial is on the plateau in the middle of the graph.
I honestly almost turned around before I made it, but I'm glad I didn't. This is on Saturday (Shabbat, day of rest) so I pretty much had the whole place to myself. The image is of a tree stump symbolic of a life cut short. It is ringed by 51 columns representing the 50 states and DC.
This morning I needed to clear my head before I started teleworking so I drove to a nearby park that had a section of bike path. This is in the Arazim Valley Park. In the foreground you can see the abandoned village of Lifta. It was originally settled in the late 1500s. These buildings date back to only the early 1910s or 1920s. In the distance you can see the Chords Bridge which spans the northern entrance to Jerusalem on Highway 1.
About a mile off the bike path and up a fairly steep climb, you arrive at the 9/11 Memorial. A section of steel girder from one of the Twin Towers is behind the clear panel at the base of the monument. The names of all those who died are inscribed on plaques that line the rear wall. My helmet is serving as the only splash of red, white, and blue at the monument.
They don't call it an adventure bike for nothing, right? Rope bridges give me motion sickness.

My username is Witterings which is from The Witterings beach in the UK.
The ferry, which has a draw bridge so is really easy to wheel bikes onto, is just inland up the estuary and crosses between Bosham and Itchenor.
We'd been on a 26 mile circuit which is a mix of gravel paths, farm roads (some more made up than others) and the quietest country lanes in the most picturesque of settings ... am very lucky to live here

Some friends from East Sussex have just taken up riding and after seeing your post, I did some research and we met up at Chichester Yacht Club on Wednesday and did the 13m Harbour Circuit. It was beautiful, especially Itchenor and Bosham (had a fab lunch at the pub near the church!). We all loved it and intend to meet again in the same area - hence asking the question where those photos are from!

Had a few days away from pan-flat prairie land. Got some elevation and a bit of fun gravel too, a 10km gravel road off the main highway out to a fishing lodge in northwestern Ontario.

What year? I have a 2015. The only draw back is how it is not TA. Amazing how they still don't offer on their CAADX models. You race any 'cross on it? It performs well on courses. I am probably going to swap my frame tho for the upcoming season. Nice bar choice, I still have the stock bars on.
