Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Freaking emergency issue showed up at work yesterday, then last night when I went to plug my phone in the Lightning connector wouldn't quite go in all the way. Couldn't see anything (tried sweeping it out anyway) and managed to get it to charge by propping the cable just right. Ordered a pair of charging pads that should arrive today, and this morning it's almost clicking in anyway.

Freaking hate phones. Of course, I love that my Lumia Icon had wireless charging (and I had pads at home and one at work for it) years before big A. Will still probably try to have a repair place replace the port, because I'm sure at some point I'll have to connect it to a laptop for some failure.

Well even for me, the change from "two week lockdown" to "two month lockdown" to "we know this is a terribad idea but we're opening anyway" to "we're semi-open but things can't go back to normal until post-vaccine which is who-knows-when and heavy precautions in the meantime and major pieces of the economy and culture are gone until then and maybe the vaccine won't fully work and get us back to normal" has me fed up. And that's someone who kept a good job; if I were poor or suddenly poor I'd have a hard time signing on, if I'm honest. Who's in charge, anyway?

Oh, right.

Will I ever again feel comfortable being with a few dozen other people, minimum, in open fresh water?

Not with the possibility of shrieking eels being in the water, too.

There was a 40' oak with a base of 4.5-5 feet across the street, down one house. Two Saturdays ago I heard chainsaws, and then the usual branch shredder truck showed up. When he showed up, the saws stopped, and I noticed a pick up truck was parked sort of diagonally across the street. The chainsaws started back up, and I was lucky enough to be outside when someone yelled, the truck shot backwards, and the whole tree came down. They made it go down between other trees, a fence, and some cars parked in the neighbors driveway. The tree seemed as wide as it was tall, and once on the ground, they made short work of that thing. I love just in time physics, and that was one of the cooler things I've witnessed.
So they pulled it with a rope tied to the truck? Lot of tricks to tree work. Last house I lived in a huge section of a pine tree fell on the house and poked holes in the roof. I cut it up as much as I could with a bow saw and the landlord got a service to come out weeks later. There was a piece which they estimated @500 pounds still on the roof and they trussed it up with ropes and lowered it to the ground without any pulleys, just tied to the tree and hoisted it up and swung it over and down.

I also watched one of them scramble up a tree with a small chainsaw hanging from his belt on a rope. I could never climb like he did.

It was teasing. I'm going to put it back in the bag for another couple of hours. I might buy... something else - Wahoo, Garmin, I'm undecided at this point... in the meantime, though. I have a ride with a friend tomorrow and I'd like to have a real computer on hand, just in case the rice doesn't revive the Bolt; I don't know that I can lean on my phone for that long kind of duration and, besides, my phone doesn't give me radar... and how can one ride without radar? Not possibly, obv.

One source indicates that you'd have better luck with kitty litter or silica gel.

When you do the epidemiological calculations, even a 70% efficacious vaccine could essentially eliminate the epidemic because there aren't enough susceptibles to keep it going. (Used to work in vaccines)

I haven't ridden in memory, but after tomorrow I have no crew. My wife left yesterday, for a month. No one to blame but myself, shortly.
But.
The dogs get really needy when one of us leaves. That's why I'm thinking about the rollers.

I hope you’re right. However, with the societal resistance to vaccines and many reputable sources saying that this is proving to be a difficult one, I’m not optimistic. My previous comment doesn’t help, because it’s been shown from the start of this that the reality turns out worse than the worst forecast. And you weren’t around in the years ago when I was worse, but I have a hard time with optimism. Shall we say.
