Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Temporary wheelset choice.

Howdy all
I am looking at 2 possible wheels that I will be riding until july (at which point I will be getting something nicer). 1 is the shimano r500 the other is the 2nd is the mavic aksiums for 75$ more. I will be riding in some fast groups so performance is important.
My question is, will I notice any performance increase from the aksiums or am I better off saving the 75$?

If you're only riding them for a few months, i would get the cheapest ones possible. I think they're both not too good of wheelsets.

Probably both are ok. Or save even more money and get the performance forte's on sale.

How much do you weigh???

What wheels do you have now? If you have a serviceable set of wheels, why not just wait.

If you don't have a decent set of wheels, a $200 set of Ultegra/ Open pros would make a very serviceable wheelset that could be you wheels for the wheel pit if you race, or just a backup set of wheels in general.

I was previously riding easton circuits...but they weren't mine ( were my close friends but he needed them back) the wheels that came on my bike are also gone (gave em away). i wouldnt really mind spending the extra 75$ If there was a performance increase but again would not want to spend it for nothing. Either wheel will be put on a beater project I am working on after I get my new wheels.

How much are you getting the wheels for? Aren't the Aksiums on sale for cheap at PBK right now, and also at Performance for $180 or so + 10% off (plus perf. points?). I'd say get the Performance Forte Titans, but the Aksiums are probably the way to go.

If you're going to sell the wheels, the Mavic name will fetch more on eBay/Craigslist then the Forte or the Shimano R500s. I've seen lots of Mavic wheels including Aksiums get bid up to ridiculous prices. If it's a temporary wheelset, compare your price to the used ending prices on eBay. The $75 might be worthwhile if it means recouping a bigger percentage of your initial cost.
