Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A CL find for a friend of mine on a budget. We're doing our first sprint tri and she's been riding an old schwin mixte with stem shifters. $200 for the bike, $20 for the compact bars, and I swapped the wheels for some old Neuvation M28X's I had. Once she gets some more miles on it we're going to slam the stem and chop the steerer. Took it for a test ride while getting it set up and it sprinted up to 30mph relatively easily. Pretty impressed with the agility of the frame.

I agreed with Bianchi 10, not.
You could've done better for $200, that bike was probably close to $200 new if not slightly less.
To be completely honest, I never knew K2 made road bikes.

Research, & have patience.

It had an MSRP of $700 from REI where the lady purchased it. Unfortunately the Seattle used bike market is obscenely high, especially in the smaller sizes(46-49cm). Most bikes that aren't stolen with Sora/Tiagra components go for $400ish minimum, and $5-800 with older 105 components. Definitely for from a top of the line bike, but you can't even get a Fuji/Novara/Scattante/Motobecane for less than $300 in seattle. We've been browsing pretty regularly for the past 1.5 months.

Understandable.
The Pacific Northwest has notoriously high prices for bikes new or used.
I usually try for year end closeouts, or try my luck @ the police auctions.
I got a broker who does the dirty work for me @ the auctions.

nah, I bet that bike was $600'ish new. I'm not saying it is a POS, I'm saying I dont think its Hot. $200 for a bike that isn't rusty or 25 years old is a good deal for any bike. Its worth riding and getting started because he will be able to sell it for what he paid as long as he doesn't fold the frame in an accident (lets hope that doesn't happen).

Seattles resale market does not effect whether a bike is hot or not.

Not.

I'm curious. Alex, please enlighten us to the qualities of your $599 Raleigh that you believe make it "hot".

I'll Copy and paste what I said about your bike from Hot or not...

can you Look at that bike and HONESTLY tell me it is SIZZLING? It may be a nice bike for you but when you look at it, do you really, I mean deep down REALLY think that bike looks hot???

1-It just doesn't look aggressive.
2-saddle is nearly lower than your bars
3-Triple crank is rarely hot, yours is not the rare case.
4-The geometry of that frame just looks....ehhh boring.
5-components look cheap
6-mismatched cages
7-computer on stem doesn't look good. With all the garmins and "cooler" looking options with out in front bar mounts, computers on stems just look out of date.
8-stack of spacers

overall, the bike just looks boring. There is nothing flashy about it and as you posted yourself.....STOCK

I know it wasnt specified in the original post but when he said "less than 2k" I would assume that means purchased new, or built w/a new frameset and components.

For someone to buy a 10 year old bike off craigslist for $500 that cost 3k new is kinda missing the point, right??

I built my bike w/a brand new frameset but I ebayed all my components slightly used. I spent approximately $2400 but its a 5k + bike if I tried to walk into a shop and buy it outright or have it built to my specs.

So hot or not???

Could have potential. Need different style bars and they need to be rotated down more. your bar ends should point towards your rear brake caliper, not your rear derailleur. flat saddle pointed up looks weird.mismatched tires is a NO NO! Poor bar tape wrap job.

Not as of now.

still have the same bars but I have adjusted bar and saddle position. Ive since learned how to wrap bars neatly and was at a experimental/transitional phase of tire choice when that pic was taken. Im rolling on gp 4ks now.

Then why bother! posting a photo that you know is less than optimal in "hot or not" when you already knew the bloody answer? Not. Until you make "and photograph" the modificaitons.

What do you guys think of this:?

I know it's a bit hard to see at the moment. But, it's currently stock and I'm going to modify it once I've bought the parts.

I stand corrected, I didn't do any research of my own.
Like I said I didn't realise K2 made road bikes.
The only K2's we see up here are sold in big box sports stores, most are crap MTB's, or BMX's.

My bad .

so other than the obvious gratuitous approval from strangers and sense of belonging I had hoped to achieve, my main reason for posting was to make this statement.

"I know it wasnt specified in the original post but when he said "less than 2k" I would assume that means purchased new, or built w/a new frameset and components. For someone to buy a 10 year old bike off craigslist for $500 that cost 3k new is kinda missing the point, right??"

the photo was just to play the game.

Thanks for being a smart-ass fred I appreciate your sarcasm.

This is my stance.

Does it matter what others think?
ie: bike,gear,bib/shorts,triple/double,Shimano/SRAM/Campy,etc
In the end we do this for ourselves.

Just like the "real world", not everyone will like you/your style.
Take it as you will, & don't take anything personal.

I do it for me, love it, or hate it, its me.
My bikes fit me, & they're spec'd out that way I want them for the time being.

I like the honesty in the 41, we ask for the C&C, when we post pics of our bikes in any of the Hot or Not threads.
They're honesty may be harsh for some, but in the end these guys are here to help when we need it. I was a noobs(still noobish), & these guys helped me out when I needed it.

This is the 41...
HTFU!

Edit: Not aimed @ anyone, just the way I deal with the 41.

I like the Kestral, & the Klein!
Brownie points for having bikes that aren't "the norm" in the 41.
Hot in my books.

Here's my new road/tri bike:

I paid 800€ for it ... I'm not sure what the price for it was when new but probably somewhere around $2000 I believe.
I consider that "budget" ... but it's all very relative.

I changed the bar tape to comfy black gel tape and added an aerobar:

In this picture the computer is still on the stemcap, but it's now mounted on a custom aluminum piece I made from an old broomstick and so it's centered in the middle of the aerobar now.

was pretty budget until adding the powetap, litespeed ultimate, pieced together with lbs, craigslist and ebay, just took awhile to get everything together.
