not sure what to do for a chainstay protector for my colnago after the repaint. what have you guys done.

It depends on how much you like the bike. You liked it enough to repaint, so I'd buy this:

If you twine the ends of your bartape, you can do similar along the chainstay. Tedious, but kind of cool.

im thinking about getting some chrome tape and cutting it to match the original one. just not sure how durable it will be.

I have used this "Chrome Brite Metallic Tape" from the Auto parts store on occasion. It is easy to work with, sticks well, and looks OK. (-and it's inexpensive.)

That is one of the nice things about tubulars. on the rare occasion when you loose a tire you can ride without for a few feet.
I actually saw a kid rid most of a 'cross race after the tubulars flatted and came off. he now owns some big company in Boston and was featured in a recent issue of Bicycling magazine

Wouldn't wrapping cord around the stay absorb moisture and tend to cause corrosion? I know, it's all painted, but holding moisture against it for extended time seems like trouble.

I use a clear vinyl non adhesive film on my bikes or motorcycles. Not the exact same stuff but kinda like this, you can't really see it and it works great. Plus you can cut it with scissors to whatever size and shape you need. https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Clear-OP...item1e6ad3e4b8

Consistent with the right style, this works well. And it can be refreshed with more shellac or more tape and shellac.

I've used the Lizardskin protector, and find it very protective, both in black and clear.
