Campagnolo 11s on non-campy crank

Like the topic, is this possbile? I'd like to convert to 11s, but with as much savings as possible. Would I run into any problems running 11s with a standard 10s crankset?

Campagnolo says no, but they're proprietary about everything they do... or I could just be flat-out wrong. https://www.campagnolo.com/jsp/en/faq/faqcatid_9.jsp#74

I have worked with Campagnolo 11 but never combining 11 with 10 cranks. Guessing how 9 speed cranks will work with 10 speed chain/derailleur/shifters ( but IMHO not nearly as sweet as matching 10 or matching 9 speed transmissions) the Campagnolo will "work" by mixing a 10 speed crank with the 11 speed chain/derailleur/Ergo shifters. I personally would not mix components. To me the hassle of "making it work" out weighs the pleasure of allowing the components to work properly under all conditions. Campagnolo Chorus 11 for $500 ( less if bought with the whole group) would help your 11 speed bike run much better than any 10 speed crank.

Hm, that's what I thought, especially with the narrower 11s chain. But shimano 10speed cranks should work with an otherwise 10s campy Centaur drivetrain, right?

Why don't you just try it? You have nothing to lose. If it doesn't work, or doesn't shift properly then you buy the proper crankset...

I've used a Chorus 10 crank with 11 speed and had no problems. Many others have used other brands of 10 speed cranks and also report no problems.

The main difference with the 11 speed rings is in the shifting ramps, not the tooth spacing. but the 11 speed teeth are .1mm thinner.

Those who already run Campy 10 can get by with only the shifters, cassette and chain. The RD positioning accuracy can be improved with a slight modification to the cable clamp bolt. I have one of my three 11 speed bikes using an older Chorus 10 RD and it works just fine.

Well, I have to purchase a new crankset for one...
I'm only considering making the switch to 11s because a friend's offering chorus shifters for cheap. But if it ends up being a $600+ investment, I don't really need the extra cog...

BTW, I don't want this to turn into a 10 vs. 11 speed debate.

DaveSSS: So the shifting "crispness" is comparable to that of a full 11 speed drivetrain?
