early model rock hopper
Hi,
I'm looking at an early model rockhopper, 84 or 85 according to the listing.
I was curious about the rear spacing, if it would be 135, or smaller. I tried to find some specs but didn't find that.
Also curious what others think about the price. I think the bike is awesome, but I don't know if I like it enough to pay $300 + after shipping. Vintage MTB 1984 85 Specialized Rockhopper 18" Mountain Bike 4130 Cromo | eBay

Not sure about the spacing.
I like old mtbs as much as the next guy, but that seems like a lot for a Rockhopper. These things are still undervalued - I would concentrate my efforts on a local search. There must be lots of rigid mtbs within striking distance of Atlanta.

If you do a local search on ebay,, you are bound to find a bargain. Most Ebayers are more than happy to do a local pick up. You will have a hundred dollar advantage compared to other bidders.

I just helped a friend in Charleston SC find a 90s model for $80 on craigslist. My inlaws just got a 2000ish aluminum one for $60.
They are excellent bikes and I would buy one in a heartbeat; which is what I told my friend in SC.
Edit: My memory may be wrong. They may have been Hard Rocks not Rock Hoppers. Damn I am too young for this.

The bike would have 126mm spacing. $300+ I'd only consider for something like a mint '82 Stumpjumper.

Thanks! Hard Rocks are plentiful on cl around here, I have a couple of them already. Rockhoppers and Stumpjumpers are harder to find in good condition and a color you like. I do think it's a little high and they say the paint has been touched up, which could be bad. I don't necessarily think I would need to upgrade the rear wheel, but it would be nice to have the option.I guess it could be cold set. I do love those bull moose handlebars. I guess I will pass and maybe it won't sell and they will relist it at a lower price. Thanks again!
