Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mercury S5 or Hunt 50 Carbon wheelset?

In the market for a grand, or slightly sub grand, rim brake carbon wheelset. I was familiar with Hunt so I placed an order for them and they should ship next month. I have been seeing lots of ads for Mercury wheels, and there seems to be good reviews from what I can find, but I would love to hear from people familiar with both wheels. Right now the S5 is 749.00, and the Hunt 50's were 949.00. My initial feeling is to stick with the Hunts but would love your feedback.

Should I add the Mavic Cosmic Pro UST combo into my choices?

I'd look at Light Bicycle AR-46 hoops with DT-Swiss 350 hubs around 1500g for about $700

Rides4Beer has this exact wheelset.

Until Mavic sorts out their bankruptcy problems, I wouldn't be putting those on the list. The Light Bicycle wheels suggested above have been getting great reviews and Hunt as now established itself as a legitimate brand.

You could also look at used wheelsets. There is a plethora of wheels on FB Marketplace, Paceline and others that are for sale as through axle and disk brake wheels take over.

You could also buy my 30mm carbon tubular set with Powertap for $700, almost new. Much better value than anything out there.
