Belongs in Off Topic.

I don't understand the purpose of this thread.
If a cyclist was killed by falling into a cement mixer, would we be posting about that.

Prior comments even limit the method by which people might discuss how to prepare for such an attack.

I believe this belongs in a Off-Topic forum, due to the bike playing no part in this subject.

Sincerely

Barry

Nope... Had to go looking to even find out what A&S was.
Decided it was NSFW

Just think. 10,000+ years ago in North America there were Mastadons, Wooly Mammoths, giant cave bears, short faced bears, saber toothed tigers, dire wolves, wooly Rino's, giant armadillos, giant sloths, cave lions, giant bison, giant elks. Would have been challenging to bike back then.

Next Friday I'll drive up to the Seattle area and do a100k out and back that's about 30% in couger country. My take on fatal risks is something like

1 automobile accident driving up
2 automobile accident driving back
3 struck by car on 70% not cougar country
4 fall down a ravine
5 avalanche
...
474 cougar attack

I am not concerned about 474, and will not carry anything to deal with 474. If you don't hear from me after next Friday, it was most likely not 474.

Almost as many reported incidents of this in Washington history (0) as fatal cougar attacks (2), so it's probably no. 475.

Is it Bigfeet when referring to a family? Inquiring minds want to know.

Having used that weapon for many years on a pretty good number of uncooperative subjects I would not expect effective results on a bear or cougar.

With respect to the OP (sorry for being a smarta**), the only time I had a potentially dangerous encounter with nature on a mountain bike was back in 1993 in Calabasas on the Chesbro trail and a juvenile bobcat or maybe mountain lion jumped out of the bushes and ran in front of me on a bushy single track for about 10 yards and then bailed.
I thought it was cool at the time, but with reflection I wondered if mom might have been close by...

Cougar attack ranks low on probability.

but it ranks high in worst way to die.

imagine being eaten alive, if you are the statistically unlucky one.

Dunno if it's worse than dying by motor vehicle. Subarus and Mack trucks are not going to ensure you're dead before scraping your a$$ down the road a few hundred feet, or wrapping you around an axle, or squishing various parts whilst leaving your head intact. I'd venture a say that a horrific death by motor vehicle is still statistically more likely than horrific death by being eaten alive.

Only thing is we've normalized death by motor vehicle to the point of 30k or 40k/year in US being ho-hum. Perhaps if we could turn our innate but statistically invalid fear of wild animals into fear of motor vehicles it could be useful. Based on number of deaths, we aught to be nuking automobile plants around the world, blasting car-carrying cargo ships out of the ocean, and offering bounties on crushed cars. But instead we'll carry on and on about being eaten by a cat, because that's how we're wired.

No problemo. I started this thread because another thread I went to post one was closed.

The thing I wanted to get across by starting this thread was for people to realize that IF a cougar/mountain lion attacks you, it'll be a sudden attack that you are not expecting, it'll most likely result in serious injury to you and the cougar/mountain lion will not be easily beaten off.

Cheers

Point taken and well made.
So let's just hope that the most dangerous cougar we ever have to deal with is a woozy suburbanite who just got done singing 'Sweet Child 'o Mine' at a strip mall karaoke night!

bear spray or pepper spay will work on cats javelinas pigs BUT you gotta be able to sprayM in the face & that's gonna be hard to do whereas a small hand held boat horn or lacking that a whistle will spook most creatures smaller than you > i ride in heavy thickets and have surprised cats pigs & big big gators > noise works most of the time i carry a small air horn on my back pack strap and i always have a loud whistle for 4 (& 2 )legged encounters ... being stalked by a large cat is the risk that the woods presents be glad it's not a wolf or bear but as soon as a sighting is reported local bounty hunters will eliminate another magnificent creature and you will be safe er
