Shimano UN-55 discontinued?
Is it true? Is this yet another reason to hate the year 2020?
Apologies if there's already been a thread discussing this.

What gives you a reason to believe the bB has been discontinued? I’ve not heard anything.

I just searched and found a Re---it (redaction mine) thread that discusses this. Apparently the UN-300 Tourney series will take its place. No sources cited in the thread as far as I can tell, so maybe just hearsay?

There isn't a direct source, but a bike mechanic seems to be saying (lower down in the comments of that thread) that it's discontinued and is being replaced by the UN300 and UN100.
bikeforums won't let me post the url, so remove the parathenses around the 'd'.
edit: Discontinued on jenson.

Bummer. Just two weeks ago I bought the last one in the size I needed from my nearest REI. Called about 10 local shops and none had the size I needed, and almost none of them had any on hand at all in any size.
Does anyone have experience with the mentioned alternatives?

Has anyone checked with SHIMANO, rather than spreading something found on a random social media page?
Just sayin'.

Based on the linked thread, if I'm understanding correctly, the Shimano interface that shops use to order from has stated that it is discontinued. But I could be reading it wrong.

There are lots of cheap sealed BB units available, including the Shimano BB UN-26 and offerings from Sunlite, FSA, and Vuelta among others.

Disraeli Gears
Also Tange, IRD, Velo Orange and so forth for JIS-taper cartridge BBs. Unless Shimano's got something at the same price point that's demonstrably superior, I'm happy to go elsewhere.

Weird, huh? I just bought an NOS one from a bike shop in Chico, about 2 months ago now. The mechanic had 2, with dusty boxes from a shelf, and I chose the one WITH the metal cup, the other one was missing it, lol. 😁
