Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Haleakela. Hardest day ever on a bike. It just goes up and up and up and there's no flat, no break, nothing but up.

https://connect.garmin.com/activity/57387587

It was awesome.

It was definitely a bucket list ride. I'll post a proper thread about it with pictures and all later, but as a preview here's a few top tips for Haleakela climbers:

1) Drink, drink, drink. And not just water. It's humid and you'll sweating buckets.
2) Take your time on the lower 10 miles. It looks flat, but it's still a 5-6% grade, and you may have a headwind coming down the mountain into your face.
3) Drink, drink, drink.
4) Stop and take pictures. It's an amazing view at every elevation.
5) Drink, drink, drink.
6) Get into a rhythm that works for you. There's really no flat portions, just 6% for miles and miles and miles.
7) Did I mention, drink?

Great job caloso. Having done Haleakala in Jan of this year, I can attest to how amazing the view and the ride is (and the humidity.. oy)...

I was on a rental bike, and didn't get to the top. I made it to the visitor's center, and at that point I was tired and decided to call it quits. Someday I will go back and make it to the summit.

Just a quick question, what is the elevation of the visitor's center? I thought it was ~7500ft, but looking at your trip on GC it's around ~8000 or 8800ft? Just curious.

Congrats again.

This year's Horrible Hundred in Clermont, Fl.
The hilliest ride in Fl, as far as I know.
The winds were supposed to start at 5 mph but, seemed like most of the day was spent fighting a 10-15 mph head and cross wind.

To make up for caloso's over-indulgence with altitude, I found a flat place to ride in the boonies. What a surprise! https://connect.garmin.com/activity/57533553

Some cross riding (not race). Took a dirt trail up the mountain instead of the roads for something different. Still most of the riding was on roads.

That one looks very fun, including the coffee stop at the Daily Grind!

Well we have a few. My "regular" Quarq is BB30 so it won't work on my cross bike. All our other bikes have GXP BBs. My wife regularly switches her compact between her road and TT bike. I actually swapped hers onto the cross bike for today.

Saturday group ride, the part where I got dropped is fairly apparent from the power data.

Nice to get out and do some riding after a weekend of rain. Oh and a big thank you to my Garmin, who got me rerouted once I missed a turn and ended up lost in El Cajon.

In that case, only you can decide if it is worth the money or not, it's all relative.
