RWGPS Too Much Useless Garbage

I went to RWGPS tonight to do some planning -
And there's this new pop-up "Explore Other routes in this Area" right in the middle of the small map.
And you can't get rid of it.

Over the past couple of years, I believe the RWGPS website has gotten worse.
They keep coming up with all these new Edsels - most of which you don't really need or want.
And, quite often, you can't choose whether you use them or not.

When you send in a help ticket, you get a rah-rah speech about how great it is -
to be able to make stock trades on the Tokyo Exchange while riding across Iowa.

Kinda like resetting the clock in your car.
47 steps including a security challenge.
And if you say - "In the old days, you just adjusted a knob." - they get mad.

If I want to see other rides in the area, I know where to look.
At the very least, have it a a drop-down choice -
Not floating in the middle of an already small map no matter where you move it.

It may be time to look elsewhere - which means lots of work exporting files.
If I go, I will never return.
But I really, really hate floating pop-ups - especially when I am a Premium subscriber.

I was looking on the app and couldn't get it to happen, got on the computer and found what you're talking about.

It appears when looking at a Route.

One workaround that might help: It disappears if you Edit the Route

Viewing Route:

Editing Route:

One more tip, since you mention the map being small, in the Edit screen, hit that square white icon in the upper left corner of the map in the Edit screen and you've got a BIG MAP!

I'm looking at maps I have finished. So, I have no need to edit.
I don't want to have to spend a lot of time doing work-arounds for things I don't want or need.
Especially when I am a premium customer.
Whatever happened to "Click if you no longer want to see"?
I'm ready to dump RWGPS after many years.

Understood, but just because you're on the edit screen doesn't mean you're forced to edit.

I hear you.
I know.
Of course, you need to be careful on the edit screen.
You are safest in the POI tab.
But, again, it's a work-around.
I truly wish that Verizon, the bank, RWGPS didn't do this.

I am waiting for the day when car companies switch the location of gas and brake pedals.
They will probably say, "Cars are so much more efficient this way."
Then express bewilderment when there are a zillion crashes.
"Who woulda thunk?

Thanks.

Try this.

https://brouter.de/brouter-web/

Click once to set start point, click again to add a destination, repeat as necessary. Drag an existing line to adjust. Drop down menu at the top to select different flavors of routing suggestions. Export to GPX file and open the GPX with the Garmin app to upload to the GPS. All of the above done on the phone.

Or www.cycle.travel, which can connect directly to Garmin.

Have you contacted RWGPS? In my experience, they respond promptly and seem interested in listening.

I looked at one of my routes via the web, which should have nearby routes, and didn't get the pop-up you are getting. I went to Jump To > Routes > and selected a route.

I also looked to see if I had a setting turned off but couldn't find anything obvious.

For me it only appears after zooming or panning the map.

I am with you. As soon as I zoomed out it appeared. I guess I do not normally zoom out.

RidewithGPS is great!

Never had any pop up. I just use the tools I need. And more important: I don't use heat maps, most people are not very ambitious when selecting roads to ride a bike.

Oh, you'll get the pop-up next time you open a route you have finished.

If memory serves, you've been carping about RWGPS for years. A quick search found a post back in '21 when you hated the road-composition change they made.

Why don't you improve your life, and ours, by using a different tool? Unless, of course, you do use a different tool, have a vested interest in same, and carp about RWGPS for other reasons.

I've created 6-7 new routes in RWGPS the last two days and it's worked perfectly. I do see the "other routes" thing on the bottom of the screen and have found it very useful as the routes I'm creating are in a area not familiar to me, and somewhat congested. It's been helpful to see routes other people use to get from point A to B. If you find it's in the way..pan the map a bit..no big deal. RWGPS is continually upgrading their mapping software and I find most everything they do helpful.

Enjoy life..use another tool and save your angst for your family and friends.

Looking at other routes can be interesting, though I always take it with a grain of salt...

I typically have plotted my own routes and then adjusted them with heat map information from the application. I haven't necessarily expected others to try riding my route - though also didn't take much care in something other than the default of "public". I was thus amused to find my only review on a route (this one - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42177041). Though do feel sorry for Lenny to have ridden it.

As it turned out - what I actually rode that day was different - https://ridewithgps.com/trips/119476269 - so I guess I accidentally left behind an initial attempt at creating a route, didn't ride it but someone else tried it and posted their review. The reviewer thought the eight mile stretch near Crofton was OK - which interestingly enough was also a part that I rode on my actual ride. I am not claiming my ride was that much better since my general goal was the first full day riding and I was willing to pick a more direct route to get myself to Annapolis and then outskirts of Baltimore. I wasn't really looking for scenic or even necessarily pleasant riding and willing to trade that off in a way that perhaps the reviewer wasn't.

So in general I put less faith in a random route I find in RWGPS than say something also described on a journal page.

I've been a premium user at RWGPS for years.
Go to a route you've already saved - let's say you are thinking about a variation.
But don't go into edit - just look at it and zoom in.
The popup will appear at bottom center.

Nope, nothing. Doesn’t do it. Perhaps a service ticket with RWGPS is in order.

You have to be viewing a route on the website.

It appears when using Opera on Windows 11 anyways.

Does NOT appear while editing a route.

Does NOT appear while viewing a route in the App (Android tested by me)

I am not opposed to updates.
And if I were using RWGPS for free, I would have no say.
But I've been a Premium user for 10+ years.
A popup like this should be optional.
Certainly, with the option to hide.
You may be able to hide it, but I can't find out how.

Interesting. Given your experience, I had another go on my MacBook Pro. Using Microsoft Edge I could replicate the OP's experience, but using Safari, the pop-up did not show.
