Bicycling just started showing up at our house for free about a year ago. It's roughly worth the price we pay, so I'm happy enough with it.
I swear the cover articles remind me of women's mags in the supermarket checkout aisle (no offense to the women) with their constant "fast ways to lost 10 pounds!" BS.

But really, go to any Borders or B&N magazine section and flip through the five or six different mags you'll find there. Pick the one you like.
I've never looked through Bicycling, as it's not so common in the UK, but I've heard it's crap and just recycles the same stories every few months...

Why don't you give him a link to this thread
Maybe they'll change the crap they're printing now
I'd love to spend my $$ on as US magazine.

bicycling is the Cosmo of the bike world. Every cover has articles titled:
"10 ways to do this" or 60 second to better something.
It is geared to entry level enthusiasts. Can you change a flat? Do you know what a chamois is? Then you don't need to read Bicycling anymore.

I generally stopped paying serious attention to BICYCLING when the likes of Frank Berto and John Schubert left. My wife keeps getting me a subscription so I will have something to read while on the porcelain throne. I want them to start doing hard-core test to destruction stuff. Or putting brain buckets on a heated head form in a wind tunnel to see which ones cause less over heating. Even if it offends advertisers. I'd pay more for it then.

Bicycling Magazine stinks something awful. It's on the same level as subscribing to Runners World if you're a runner (which I am...somewhat)...I believe they're both published by Rodale? How many times do I need to be told that blueberries are an excellent food? According to them, at least once/issue. Clearly not a mag. choice for the learned.

Cycle Sport for racing news...but, it always comes to my house a month after I see it in the stores (I live in the US). I'll probably let the subscription die and just buy an issue or two off the newstands.
Point taken and agreed...it's definitely the love affar with Wiggens and Millar magazine...and the constant doping thing is REALLY old (which I posted about a year ago too)
do they still do "racing news"?
last few times i wasted my money on that POS magazine, every article was about doping, each issue seemed to have an interview with david millar, and countless pics of riders with 'i support drug free sport' bands on.
these days, when i want a glossy english language mag, it's pro cycling. it's not perfect, but they don't preach.

Bicycling is 90+ percent paid and unpaid advertising telling folks what they aught to be buying next. Try counting the number or articles that are not about the next great best thing since sliced bread.

Alot of plusses for Road Bike Action and for Cycling Plus. I really do enjoy Cycling Plus even though it is a British magazine. It offers some fine seemingly unbiased gear reviews and bike reviews. Although I am not from the UK I enjoy the local rides section. It is nice to see where other folks get to ride. I also like Cycle Sport USA for Pro Tour news, even though it has gotten a bit schlocky and heavy handed. I believe there is also a magazine called Road which has gotten a few nice reviews in here. I agree with what an earlier poster said when he suggested that you go to your local Borders or Barnes and Noble to find the one you like. The ones near me usually have 5 or 6 different magazines on their shelves.
Cheers,
Brian

I get Bicycling too. I only did it because I got a cheap subscription on ebay. I wouldn't recommend it as a cycling mag. unless you are just getting into the sport and know about nothing. The reviews are worthless. I just read an "article" on how to ride more and one of its suggestions was to have meetings on the bike. Either it's going to be worthless as a meeting or worthless as a ride and therefore, is a worthless recommendation. I just see it now. I know you're a potential new client, but if you want to meet with me, you'll have to 1) get/bring a bike and 2) be ready to ride.

I like Velonews a lot, cyclingnews I don't like, their web page seems to be so disorganized I don't know but Velonews is very interesting.

I really like Cycling+, even though it is UK-oriented. It is full of substance; good articles, meaningful reviews, and intelligent columnists. I look through Velonews at B&N, and occasionally purchase. Bicycling really took a dive a while back, but I still check it for worthwhile articles, and sometimes purchase it at B&N. I do the same with RBA and Road. I will even look through the racing-oriented mags, and sometimes make a purchase, even though I am probably what most of y'all would call a Fred, or at least semi-Fred. I check Velonews.com almost daily on-line.

I never even knew about sex pillows until I started getting Bicycling. I learn something new every time I read the mag. It's for the common folk not wannabe racers.
