Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday -- the day started nice, with a decent temp of 17C, but the temp dropped quickly during the ride and my feet are still cold!!

This was Rowan's first ride out to the end of the Cycleway since his accident!! A bit of a milestone! We've been building up the distance, and he's been exercising in other ways like gardening and walking, and we finally did it today.

Distance: 27.01km
Elevation: 222m
Moving Time: 1:37:05
Elapsed Time: 1:39:26
Speed: Avg: 16.7km/h | Max: 29.9km/h

Apple blossoms on one of Rowan's apple trees ...

First rose of the season ...

Today is the first day of DST. When we switch to DST, I feel like life can begin again. The long, dark, and cold half of the year is over. We can start enjoying evenings again.

To celebrate, Rowan and I went for a walk and run to & at the beach.

I did a 4.8 km run, then a 0.6 km run around the local oval.

I was stuck inside most of the weekend due to family drama I may have to play hooky one day this week to get some decent miles in!

Still got a short ride in on Saturday night - on the single speed, with a quick stop at the grocery store on the way home. It was my first night descent of the season, so I took it reallllly slow!!! 16.4 miles, 846'.

Here we go...about 1/4 mile before the descent really starts!

Rode to work. It's 2.3 miles but then I ride home for lunch. Then back to work. Then back home so 9ish miles and did that few times during the week. Looking up a route to ride to my haircut this week.

This weekend was the 30th running of the Salisbury MD (USA) Seagull Century ride. The last time my wife and I did this was 11 years ago. We had dinner at the phenomenal Cactus Taverna restaurant and later met up with friends Shana and Perry at our kinda dumpy Sleep Inn motel.

Saturday morning Carole and Shana did the 63 mile metric century while Perry and I did the 103 mile Century ride. We hit a bit of drizzle and light rain but all in all just perfect conditions for a long ride. Perry is a triathlete and was riding his new aero bike - he kicked my butt. First time I've finished a century in under 6 hours, so at age 61 I actually set a PR.

They've changed the route since we last did it, mostly for the better. Very nice having our own lanes and even our own bridge to come into Assateague national Park for the 62 mile rest stop - none of the wild ponies were around this year. Carole and Shana did great for not having put in very many biking miles this year, and we all enjoyed the pie and ice cream at the finish line.

Perry, John (me), Shana, Carole at the start

The 103 mile route goes counterclockwise, with the 62 mile rest stop at the far right at Assateague National Seashore.

Saturday I did a 32 mile loop through the city on my new Litespeed. Yesterday my wife and I rode 7 miles to La Boulangerie bakery in Uptown, enjoyed the best lemon blueberry danish on the planet, then rode 7 miles home. I think from a calorie standpoint, that ride was a wash.

64 mile ride over to the coast, about 5 miles of the Pacific Coast Bike route and then back via some roads I hadn't been on before. Not much elevation but one hard climb with 600ft in a mile. Beautiful weather. low 60's when I left and low 70's when I got home.

Thursday I went for my usual Davis Is. evening ride. Came very close to being hit by a van. I was heading south in the bike lane, coasting up to the light as it just turned green. I was almost to the other side of the intersection when I felt something wasn't correct (looking back I believe the sound of the van's engine on the right side alerted me). Instead of following the angle of the bike lane I stayed straight. A van blast through the intersection and passed about 6 inches from my handlebar on my right side. Keep in mind there was a right turn lane before the intersection and no lane (except for the bike lane) on the right side after the intersection. Scared the crap out of me and I did a fair amount of uncharacteristic swearing. Anyways still got in 26 miles after I calmed down a bit.

Saturday did my Davis Is. to Picnic Is. ride. I threw in some extra bits to make it more interesting. 41 miles. Sunday had a nice ride out to Flatwoods for 45 miles. Saw some birds on the levy.

My riding buddy who moved away came back for a visit,

& we got some rides in.

Saturday 39, 5,100' over & around the mountain.

Super nice day, so no speed records were set but roses were smelled.
