Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which brand is the best value overall

Ok, so we have heard of motobecane. There are other bikes which are said to be a good value as well, brands like Jamis, KHS, Scattante, Fuji, etc.

My question is which bike company consistently offers the best components and parts for the money? I'm not asking about brand appeal or snazzy graphics...just whcih company will take your hard earned money and give you the best possible parts for what you pay in comparison to others.

Depends on the grade of bike- but you get what you pay for. A couple of Manufacturers do seem to offer a good price for a good spec but there is normally some drawback somewhere in the line. I ride a couple of Giants and for the money- they are good. Only thing I do not like about them is the quality of the wheels but for such a cheap bike- there has to be some cost cutting somewhere on the spec.

I don't know how you can possibly beat Bikes Direct. Compare their pricing with mainline companies and see what you come up with. I tried on that Fly Ti hardtail MTB, the closest thing I could find was double the price.

Performance often has good deals with their sales. In addition to their house brands, they carry others like Fuji, Giant, and Schwinn. If you live near one of thier stores, you can test ride the bikes.

Where you get the "deal" at is the best overall value on the bike that fits you and the one you like.

Among well known brands, I would say Felt and Giant.

For lesser known brands, and this is based just from hours of surfing various sites... Scattante, Schwinn, Iron Horse, Leader, and of course, bikes from BD.

Whichever one you can get a good deal on at the shop. Most of the major manufacturers have similar offerings at the same price point.

The best value is the bike you like and ride. If you do not ride it or like it, it is a waste of money no matter the brand.

The stuff at gvhbikes goes from cheap to insanely expensive, and allows you to pick every single part the way you want. It's not a custom frame, but everything else is exactly how you spec it. I've been tempted recently by some of the lower cost steel frames they carry.

Anyone have an opinion on the Viner steel frames versus the KHS Flite with an 853 tubeset?

What actually constitutes a bad frame? I've heard this many times and wonder, do any of the major or even semi-major manufacturers really produce a crappy frame? Bad fits don't count.

Aside from wal-mart blue lights, which I don't think many people here would even think about.
