Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thoughts on the Shimano R600 crankset?

Looking for a compact crankset for my bike. The Shimano R600 looks like a solid unit for a good price. Any experience with them?
Compared to say Tiagra or 105 cranks?

Also another one I am considering is the Truvativ Rouleur.

my understanding is that the R600 is more or less a 105 crankset.

I believe it's more akin to a compact tiagra crankset. r600 has hollowtech II bottom bracket and spindle but solid crank arms rather than hollow. Check out r700 for not much more $$ if you're looking to save weight.

^^^ This.

I have both a 105 and Ultegra crank. The 105 & R600 uses well made steel chainrings while the Ultegra & R700 uses well made alloy chainrings. Both shift perfectly. The steel will wear longer and are not heavier than the thicker alloy rings on the Ultegra crank.

The R600 crankset weighs about 100 grams more than a standard fc-6600 crank. It has solid arms which probably make the difference. The chainrings are nice, and it shifts well. In terms of stiffness, any differences are not noticeable to me.

The R600 and R700 are not current products, and you can probably get a good deal on them.

How does it compare to 3rd party brands like FSA or Truvativ?
I'm also looking at the Truvativ Rouleur for about the same price. Personally I find the R600 a bit dull aesthetically. But performance is priority of course.

I have little experience with FSA cranks, but I don't really like them. I don't know about Truvativ cranks, and I think they may be similar to SRAM which are not bad.

I've got a R700 on one of my bikes. Works great. I think they are only about $30 or so difference between the R600 and R700. Probably no difference other than a couple of grams.

I have the TruVativ Elita crankset on another bike that was even cheaper and I actually think performs better than the Shimano.

The r600 came stock on my Felt. I changed it out for a standard, but for the time I had it the crankset did what it was supposed to do.
