Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Florida trip, need advise please.

I am going to be in Florida from

Jan 27 - Jan 30 in Orlando, staying at this place :
https://www.expedia.ca/pub/agent.dll?...&eapid=31170-4

Jan 31- Feb 6 Miami, staying here

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=3000+B...es+of+America+

How is the weather at this time in this region?

Should I get summer clothes or/and spring things as well?

Any interesting bike routes there that you can recommend?

Would you like to get together maybe for a rides?

Any advise will be appreciated!

You got the links backwards. If you have access to a car, look up Clermont in mapmyride. There should be plenty of rides in that are posted there. It is about 20-25 min from where you'll be. Nice to ride and it is pretty rural. Can't help you with Miami other than telling you not to ride there so you can outlive your vacation!

If you do Clermont be sure to include Sugarloaf Mountain Rd., Buckhill Rd., Skyview. Nice rural routes with some elevation. Bring a variety of clothes since the weather this time is variable, low 70's one week, then low 40's the following. If you use mapmyrides to search for routes, include Winter Garden, which is just next to Clermont, since many rides start on the West Orange Trail at several trailheads off of West Plant St.

Also, post in the Southeast Regional discussions to see if you get a bite. Enjoy.

Here is another vote for riding in Clermont; riding in Florida doesn't get much better than that. If I am in town that weekend, I wouldn't mind meeting up for a ride or two.

4th for Clermont here, though I rarely ever venture that way. There's some good riding on the coast between Cocoa and Titusville too, if you car to take the 45 minute drive over there. Thirdly, and I probably wouldn't do this on a weekday.... but on a weekend morning you can ride the length of Orange Ave from where it ends near you in Kissimmee to Downtown Orlando, then on up to Winter park. Traffic isn't so bad Saturday and Sundays, especially in the early AM the road is quite empty. There's many long stretches without stops and the road is nice and wide for the most part. It's about 20-25 miles from where you'll be at to Downtown, then add another 5 or so if you wanna go to the other end in Winter Park. Unfortunately I don't know of any good riding that's more local to Kissimmee, that's an area of Central FL that I generally avoid if I can.

And a lot of the roads here are very fragmented, so a GPS will help a lot.

Thanks a lot for those great responses! It will be very nice to meet up and ride together indeed! I am not sure how to get together though. I will have my Toronto cellphone with me and my laptop. I will PM my number. Thanks!

It could be 70F, or it could be 40-50F and windy...just depends on how strong the cold fronts are that push down from the North into the area. Bring clothes to stay warm, but be prepared for possible short weather too...don't know what else to tell you..watch the forecast.

I grew up in Miami and used to ride my bike everywhere. I'm older and wiser now.

Key Biscayne was a popular ride back then and still is from what I hear. I left before Weston was a gleam in anyone's eye but that area west of Ft. Lauderdale has alot of rides from what I hear.

Some South Floridians will chime in.

As far as the weather goes, aside from regular summer stuff, bring arms warmers, light rain/wind jacket, vest, hat, med thickness gloves, light shoe covers, knee warmers, and maybe a single long sleeve jersey. Doubt you'll need anything beyond that, especially coming from Canada. However, do look at the 7 day forecast before leaving Canada for FL. It will give you an idea.

When you're in Orlando, drive east to Titusville and ride out Beach Road through Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to Playalinda Beach. The beach at the far north end is one of the largest nude beaches on the east coast, and Playalinda is the longest undeveloped beach on the east coast. Also, by late January Discovery should be back on the launch pad, and the road goes a few miles north of the pad, which makes for a great view.

For Central Fla rides check LBS' websites: Orange Cycles, Locomotion, David's World, Bike Works, Kyle's bike shop. Plenty of useful links. There is a nice loop around Orlando International Airport, flat as a pancake but closer that Clermont.

weather: Central FLA - www.wftv.com, Miami - do not know. Daily temperature swing can easily be 15 degrees either way under an hour.

Good luck

Clermont is good hill riding for Florida. Space Coast (Merritt Island and Melbourne have some good riding, very scenic rides along the river).

Not missing much this time of year in J'ville anyway.

Clermont is good riding though. Find the afore mentioned roads to ride. get with the local shops or find a map for the Horrible Hundred.

Here is a nice ~45 mile route that will take you over the back side of Sugarloaf Mountain Road, and then over Buckhill Road. This is a route I enjoy riding a lot with good roads and minimal traffic. If you want to climb Sugarloaf Mountain Road from CR 561 (Looks like this), you can stay on CR 455 instead of turning on CR 561A, and then come back around after you do the Buckhill climbs. I still don't know if I will be in town this weekend, but as I said before I wouldn't mind joining you if I am. I will drop you a PM letr in the week.

I'm jealous. The weather's been perfect for the last couple days, but I can't get any decent rides in because of work. Where was that picture taken?

Glad you have enjoyed the area. Photo looks llike it was by Lake Minneola and Lake Shore park? It is a fantastic area to ride. Glad you had a good time in our neck of the cycling woods.
