Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Ride Reports - Inside and Out - January 12/13

Tell us what you're doing this weekend to keep active. Cycling outside? Cycling inside? Weightlifting, running on the treadmill, swimming, skiing? And what's it like where you are?

Friday - swam (floundered through) 16 lengths of the swimming pool; cycled 35.4 km with Rowan and my father; walked 1.5 km so far (very likely a little more later today.

it is currently -1C, with a windchill factor of -7C. It was about 2C when we started our bicycle ride today (WC -4C), and dropped to about 0C while we were out there.

After that ride, somehow the predicted 29C in Perth, Australia next week seems vaguely appealing!!

I'm tired now. We've been putting in a lot of time in the gym (or riding outside when we can) lately.

56+ miles at a 20.0 pace, 60+ degrees and a group of 25+ people in the middle of January? I'll take it. It was crazy warm today for this time of year in Columbus, OH, and a lot of people took advantage of it. The roads were all wet, which kind of sucked, but really, i can't complain. I doubt we'll get another weekend like this for a while. If I'm right, it'll be in the 30's on Monday

but it felt AMAZING to get out for a good, fairly warm ride for the first time in over a month. i rode last weekend but it was 39 and we battled some snow drifts. this was definitely much better.

Friday - 35 degrees, partly cloudy, 37 miles. Started way to fast and paid the price over the last three miles. Was a great way to start the day before heading into work a little late.

Today - 44 degrees, foggy/heavy mist, 20 miles. I don't think there could have been any more mist in the air without it actually raining. Despite that, I was able to stay warm, somewhat dry, and actually enjoy the ride.

Saturday - 27.91 km

Nice, but slow, ride with Rowan and my father. My legs didn't have much energy today ... it is the 7th day of exercise for Rowan and me ... we'll rest on the flight to Australia in 3 days time.

It warmed up to 0C (WC -4C) while we were out there, and the wind was gusting around 32 km/h.

It was almost 30 degrees above average today. Started out doing a few errands around town on the bike. Later, rode to a couple neighboring towns for coffee/snacks. All together probably a little more than 40mi. It was great to be out.

I went for a solo ride around Hagg Lake this afternoon.

Temperatures ranged from 28-35 F. During the summer I usually see at least 20 other cyclists on the 10-mile loop around the lake. Today I didn't see one either on the road around the lake or the 15 mile trip there and back. It was weird. I thought the lack of rain would bring people out.

Saturday - the ride started off well enough. The weather was cool, 75 F, at the start of the ride at 7 am. There was some wind but not too much. Then, at about 930 am after the temp rose to 85 F, the weather changed and the wind picked up and the temperature dropped. Then, a localized flash storm blew in - the wind was blowing so hard that the rain came down vertically and visibility had dropped to about 100 feet. After wrestling with my front wheel for about 1 km, I finally stopped, along with two motorcycles and a van on the side of the road, and just stood on the side of the road in the storm for about 15 minutes. Then, the rain stopped but there was about an inch of water on the road. So, I rode back to my car, about 8 km away. And, the car and parking lot was dry! All in all, I rode about 82 km.

Sunday - the ride was thankfully uneventful. The weather was also cool at 75 F but a bit more windy when I started my ride at 7 am and rose gradually to 90 F at 1050 am when I completed my 100 km ride.

Saturday - raced my clubs weekly summer track meet. Comprised of three races: a scratch race, keirin and mystery distance scratch race for a total of 33km

Sunday - snuck in a quick 43km. Rode the 1 in 20 (very popular 6.8km climb on Mt Dandenong) for the first time in over a year then over Olinda to Montrose and climb back the same way this afternoon. Given I'd been away from any hills other than my couple of days climbing in Italy last September, I'm happy with 17:45. Plan on being in the hills again regularly in preparation for my US trip later this year. Many of the US climbs are much longer than the French Alps climbs and alot higher! Looking at a couple of climbs topping out at over 4,300m in Colorado!

Rode a century on Saturday with 5,434 feet of gain. Warmest weather I can remember for January. The roads were wet and now the bike is covered in road grit, but I got the first of my "century-a-month" centuries on the books!

Finished 8 hours of overtime at work and there was no way I was going to let a 14 C day go by in January in my part of the world. 40+ km ride in mid afternoon and I enjoyed every km. It beat the hell out of the trainer I've been on lately.

A bit late, but Friday was really nice.

Friday:
Weather: 55-ish*F. 20 MPH wind. Sunny (for the ride). Cloudy (for the run)
Ride: 20.50 miles (4 laps of a local lake)- Third ride on my new CAAD10- Pleasant ride and atmosphere
Run: 12 miles (combined two different run loops across town)

Saturday:
Weather: 29*F. 10 MPH wind. Cloudy.
Run: 3 miles

Sunday:
Weather: 20*F. Sunny. Ice covered roads.
Rest: Much needed rest.

I wanted to get a good ride in with the weather Friday, and I thought Friday would be the last day of the week I would be able to run with someone, so I decided to do the long run on the nice day. My running partner didn't show up. It was a rough 12 miles, but I made it. Crashed and burned on the run the next day. I wanted 10 miles, I got 3. I did a poor job of getting nutrition after Friday. I had my usual greek yogurt once I got home; however, we left for the restaurant late, and then the restaurant never served us, so we left. By then it was to late to save my recovery.

Foggy, below freezing at night, and not much above during the day here, so SIR even cancelled. Too much worry about occasional ice patches. So heck, we went snowshoeing with our spin instructors and some of their friends, our second snowshoe of the year. We got plenty tired and some seriously sore legs out of it. About the same hours as we would have ridden, just different muscles. Absolutely beautiful clear weather, which is the problem. We want our rain back.

There was a lot of grinding going on to get this body rolling but it was worth every bit of it for this view of a serene LI Sound with Manhattan hidden behind the fog bank.

Any time it's 47F here in mid-January and not windy — and one can get in a ride — it's a gift.

Sat AM, 68F, slight breeze, a quick 13 mile loop on my Felt-85 to warm the legs up, Sat Evening, 80F, another 13 mile loop with my 14 yr old son, him on his 86 Team Fuji...he is getting harder to keep up with on shorter runs....but I can outlast him! (he tends to jackrabbit from starts and up hills....spilling too much energy!) Sunday, 38 miles on a local trail (32 out of 38 on the trail) 80F, light breeze...Flatted my Felt 6 miles out and realized I did NOT have my presta stem adapter....had to call the sag wagon...my wife brought me my backup, 87 Bridgestone 550, did a swap and went on our way. Avg 16-18 mph

Yesterday we did 32 miles of mixed road and dirt in the Marin headlands. Brisk but clear and absolutely stunning. The mouth of the SF bay to the right, and the San Francisco skyline just peaking out to the left.

Here's a video from my Sunday afternoon ride. I got a new GoPro camera and was playing with it and trying to figure out the Windows Movie Editor and the Youtube soundtracks. Anyway, full-screen it and turn the sound up.
