Can anyone tell me about my vintage raleigh super record 10 speed?

Found this at thrift store yesterday & bought it even though it is in rough condition. Then researching it showed almost nothing on it! Would anyone who knows this bike tell me about it? Also it has a THE RALEIGH badge instead of Raleigh England badge - when did this come out? Where was it made?

Finally, best way to remove surface rust?

I appreciate any help.

Those Raleigh derailleurs were made by Sun Tour. The brakes were likely made by Weinmann. Your bike is from around 1980 or so. Here are a couple pages from the 1981 catalog.

Is there a made in ....l decal at the bottom of the seat tube? That head badge usually signifies an Asian built Raleigh.

I looked for a "Made In..." but there isn't one. It does have a badge the says "THE Raleigh" instead of just Raleigh. Does anyone know when they came out with that badge? I filled tires yesterday & they held air! Then rode it around the neighborhood - it rides nice & shifts almost as smooth as my 80's Schwinn Tempo; which is one of the smoothest shifting bikes I've been on!

Nice find. Take it all apart, regrease and replace any bad bearings, new brake cable, seat post, true the wheels up, new chain, check the inner tubes, spoke protector and tires etc. and it should be a fine bike for years to come.

Was that head badge (2 lines of slashes at the bottom) also used on the US made Huffy Raleighs? I don't know I'm just asking.

You shouldn't put a lot of effort into this bike. Removing all the rust/fixing everything, will only make it a $100 bike.

I have seen what you described on Malaysian and Taiwan sourced Raleighs. Can't recall seeing that badge on Techniums.

Have you found the serial number? Sometimes you can determine the manufacturer from the serial number and its location on the frame.

I was just looking at a 81 Super Record with a head badge just like yours. It had a made in Japan Sticker on it.
