What's my Raleigh?

Hi,

got a not-so-new Raleigh the other day, but there is no further specification of model. What do you say?

- 10-speed.
- Derailleurs: Shimano FE and RS.
- Hubs and brakes: Sturmey Archer.

The Sturmey Archer drums are stamped "5 79" and "4 81" - does this mean May 1979 and April 1981?

Yes, those are the dates of the hubs. The Shimano derailleurs probably also have date codes.

Most of the members of this forum are in North America, and I don't think anything like that bike was never imported here; so I doubt many of us have ever seen one like it. The closest thing sold here was the Record, but it had caliper brakes and Suntour derailleurs. Everything about your bike looks consistent with the 1981 date. Pretty cool!

Raleighs made in Canada had non-cottered cranks starting around 1978. This one shows cottered cranks. Perhaps a customized project?
