Flat bar shifter recommendations
My buddy just bought a LHT, I知 very happy because he wants a double crank and flat bars. So that means I get his triple crank and barend shifters. I知 going to give him my double crank and f/d but I知 not sure about the shifters and brake levers, I usually only deal with drop bars. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

more details mr sloar
his bike is 9, 10 spd, dynasis or not?
as a general rule, deore trigger shifters are a perfectly fine balance of reasonable cost / quality / tactile feel in how they work, with added bonus of being findable anywhere in the world pretty much.
A few years ago I put 10 spd deore trigger shifters on a bike, matched up with a dynasis deore rd--so make sure your friend and you read up on dynasis etc and all the details

It’s going to be a 2x10, LX r/d and Tiagra f/d. Plans for a commuter, and loaded for an 8 mile ride to the beach.

that's why (prime example) Shimano has multiple price points, get the one you can afford..
I toured on old gear, Simple reliable friction shifting, that's what is on my bikes ..
flat bar? they'd be thumb shifters.. drop bar they were bar end..

These are good: https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/produ...0/SL-4700.html
The SL-4700 is for 2x10. There's also an SL-4703 for 3x10. Unfortunately, I believe the one you want for 2x10 has been commanding a higher price.

and you and your friend are really going to have to read up the details on dynasis vs non dynasis rd stuff and how they work with a given trigger shifter.
and as mentioned, the whole 2x 3x thing of which I have no experience, only using triples. Seems to me that some shimano trigger shifters used to have a inner switch to change from 2x to 3x for the fd shifter, but you'll have to see if this is still the case, not to mention the real world workings with a 2x crank.
you should ask at a local experienced bike store, just have the proper info for them.

The dynasys is a good point, and now that I notice the current LHT comes with a 9 speed drivetrain, I'm wondering what the plan is here to change over to 10 speed. If he changes out the cassette and chain to 10 speed, but leaves the original 9 speed derailleur, the Tiagra shifters will work fine. But OP mentioned using an LX in the rear. AFAIK, Deore LX was discontinued after 9 speed, and a Deore LX 9 speed would work fine as well. Now, if there's some newer LX model with the dynasys pull ratio, that'll be a problem. But personally, I'd avoid using a dynasys derailleur.

Ok, now which Tiagra f/d, a FD4400, FD4600 or FD4700. I only ask as the new FD4700 will only work with the Tiagra SL-4700 Rapidfire Shifter (mechanical position of the cable pinch bolt means a new cable pull pitch). The FD4400 and FD4600 as well as the Deore LX r/d will be compatitable with the Shimano Tiagra SL-4600 2x10sp Rapidfire Shifters...but they are about $110, maybe a little more new.

I’ll have check on the model, his bike is already a 3x10 and mine is a 2x10.

do you guys remember that when tiagra brifters went to 10 speed, they specifically had a weird cable pull specific to them, and tiagra rd's ? I'm not sure of the details now and it may not apply to 10 spd trigger shifters, but clearly there are lot of "devil in the details" stuff going on here that these guys have to reliably informed about.

Tiagra 4400, 4500 series are 9 speed and are cross compatible
The 4600 series is 10 speed.
There was a mechanical change with the f/d and r/d and pull ratio change with the Tiagra 4700 10 speed series. This made it non-compatidle with the former 4600 series. The 10 speed cassettes are still the same. The pull ratio is the same as the 105 5800, Ultegra 6800 11 speed groupos. So you can run the higher end f/d and r/d with a Tiagra SL-4700 STI unit with a ten speed cassette.
And now we have the Tiagra GRX 400 series. This is where I am in the dark about compatibility...Specs I can do but what works with what this time around...I'll keep you informed

He could have simply kept the bar end shifters and mounted them with thumbie mounts. https://www.paulcomp.com/shop/compon...imanothumbies/

Microsoft thumbs are great. Since nobody else really does a good thumb shifter any more I gotta give it to Microshift. I haven't had much time with them but bought them for an upcoming project and from just playing with them out of the box they seem quite nice and in the little I have used them elsewhere they are great. Certainly also could do Paul Thumbies with Shimano DT or Barcon shifters.

Thumbie appreciates aside, a good trigger shifter is just really nice to use from a speed pt of view, ergonomics and light action. And they are pretty darn tough and reliable too.

The 10-speed 105 rear derailleur works fine with bar-ends if you can find one.
I switched from brifters to bar-ends and the Tiagra d/r didn稚 work.
