Philadelphia Area C&V Ride - April 26

I've been watching the planning for the Cape Cod RT ride with envy and thinking "eh, we gottem real nice trails too and our weather is always a week or so ahead of Cape Cod so how about doing this in Phila too?"

Unless someone else has a C&V ride planned at the end of April I suggest that the C&V folks in the Philadelphia area get together on the same day as the CCRT ride, at the same time, and ride the SRT from Oaks, PA to Manayunk round trip. Shine up your excellent machines and we'll enjoy the day, kick lies and tell tires. We can do a salute to Scott and PastorBob and the whole New England crew during OUR lunch break.

https://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/

Yup, there are many places to enter the SRT and many routes to take but I'm planning on starting at Oaks which has lots of good parking and easy access for everyone (ex: West Chester, Hanover, Carlisle, NJ, etc) via I76, 422, and I476). In fact folks could join in at VF park, Norristown, Spring Mill or just meet in Manayunk and ride up to Oaks with us.

So, unless there is another C&V event going on, let's do this. And if it goes well I'll arrange other times thru the season.

Actually C&V folks in other parts of the country should do the same. One big C&V ride day across the world. Oooooog.

Sounds like a great idea, not too far of a trip from the Jersey Shore.

Me too.
All praises to you for organizing a ride, though Dallas & I wished you'd made it on a date we could attend.
Calling a ride seems like such an easy thing to do, but very few of us get around to it. Also, there aren't really all that many of us, so it is better not to compete with another ride for ridership. The next C&V Philly ride may not happen for a while.

Enough kvetching: have a great time!

We all know from experience that no date will be just right for everyone. And there is NO RULE that says Phila gets only one C&V ride. Lets do this one and then plan another. One of the charms of doing this in Phila is that its available to many BF C&V folks who cannot take a 3 or 4 day weekend for a haul to a distant event. People are what's important. I'd love to do the CCRT again and chase PastorBobnlnh's wheel and drool on ScottRyder's Mk IV and ask rootboy whadell "Sand Spit East" is. But not this spring.

Pick your fav and join in. We see some of you in Phila.

I might be able to make the trek up there for that ride... passing through on my way to Boston. I will put it on the calendar and see what happens!

Since I most like would be riding that section of the trail anyways that day I might as well ride it with Philly's (and surrounding counties) best C&Ver's.

Thanks Prowler for organizing it.

I have a pretty good chance of making it...except that it's finals week and I'm not sure how much time I'll have. If I go, I'll probably ride there from Philly, ride back with youse guys (it's a Philly ride) and head home from Manayunk.

My schedule is always jammed packed on the weekends with my boys' sports activities, but, since I have enough notice, I'd love to meet up with yoose (I'm from Delaware County, our dialect is a little different then Philly) and join in the ride...

Great to hear. And I'm from upstate New York via NJ and now on the fringe of the Dutch country so my dialect is much different too. We'll get along just fine. Hope you can arrange things then scamper right up the Blue Route to KofP and join us.

soon. Is this mornings single digits the last for this winter**********?

Prowler, your ride sounds like fun .. I'll get down there at some point with some of my local C&V-er's. It would be nice to do a ride without a northeast gale blowing in my face ... Cape Cod is kind of known for that.

Where is "oaks" on the trail? It's not listed as a trailhead.

Oaks is on the Perkiomen Trail, which will run into the SRT(about a mile). It is the Egypt Road exit off of 422, there is a parking lot in the Lower Perkiomen Valley park that is pretty big and would be a good place to meet.

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

I'm on the fence with this. After all it is far closer for me than Cape Cod and I'd have a good chance of seeing KonAaron Snake and meeting a few new folks. OTOH, we've never really seen Cape Cod and Rachel would love to see Jim and Sharon. What to do?

I don't know what my odds are Dallas, and I don't want you to come for me and I end up studying. There is a definite chance of that, I have two finals that Monday.

Exactly. Officially its the Lower Perkiomen Valley Park at the Oaks,PA exit of US422. Its about 4 miles from Valley Forge Park and the KofP exit of the PA Turnpike. There is SRT parking at Valley Forge - The Betzwood parking area - but that's a bit hard to find. IOW: "you can't get there from here" and "if you don't know where it is you don't belong there". Lower Perkiomen Valley Park (aka Oaks) is much better and easier for everyone.

If you pound "Oak, PA" into GoogleMaps you'll see what we're talking about. I'll have much more details as we approach. For now just hold the date.

Sounds fun, I'm already wondering what bike to ride. Having never ridden the trail, is it all paved or mixed?

The Perkiomen Trail from Oaks to the Schyulkill River Trail (SRT) is paved and the SRT is paved for about 15 miles south from there. It then links to the Manayunk Tow Path Trail which takes us to Manayunk and our lunch break stop (about 18 miles all together. The Manayunk Tow Path is packed cinders and is in very good shape (was last fall anyway). I've ridden my road bike on it several times - no worries. I do run 700x28 (or 27 x 1 1/8) tires but I've seen numerous serious folks with their skinny tires out there too. No worries. Bring your coolest vintage 10 or 12 speed.

There is a detour around that section as well. I've ridden the toe path w/23s, but I destroyed a rim doing it once. I'd recommend 28s, and it's usually wetter this time of year. Actually I'd suggest riding around that section.
