how do you setup a shifter combined with a trigger throttle ? I had a heck of a time integrating those on the mid drive I did for my brother, he really wanted the throttle, but it pushed the shimano 8-speed trigger shifter and brake lever so far inboard they are hard to reach.

oh, and what are some old school long mountain bike brake levers ? everything now is 2-finger, which normally I love, but with the offset on both sides from the e-controls, they are not that comfortable to reach, and my bro wants something much longer...


hmmm, maybe I should hit up one of the local bike recyclers, who fix up old bikes and resell them... see if I can get some 80s/90s brake levers. no easy answer :-/



edit: ok, crap, those old long brake levers were for cantilever or sidepulls... I already know from experience they don't work that great with v-brakes, ugh. and trying to use cantilevers on a suspension fork kinda sucks, you need a bridge piece as a cable anchor..

Why not change to a thumb throttle? That's what I use anyway because I like it much better. And if you need long levers which work with linear brakes just get some of the cheap ones that come with Chinese kits (brand is Wuxing AFAIK).

B-series Shimano shifters. They bolt to my brake levers. This means I was able to drop them low enough to clear my thumb shift. So both throttle and shifter are right where I need them.

Throttle on the left could go closer, but it's where it's most comfortable. Thing with the hole on the right was the horn button, but it's missing there as it broke..

hmm, never seen those shifters. are they available for 8 speed ? whats a specific model number for a 8 speed rear/right shifter in this series?

I have Shimano 3x8 RapidFire shifters with a twist type throttle and a short grip on the right side. Everything lines up perfect, just like the left side. I think if I did it over again I would just omit the the throttle as I ride in PAS mode and don't use the throttle.

Had to use it like that. Quick setup to run 2 motors on my fatbike and too cold to do something more.elegant in the garage Only had throttle for the front motor and it was always needed to get rolling in snow,, I felt it worked fine,

But you can't go wrong with MNebiker's advice. A Shimano trigger shifter fits well with any brake lever. Then go with a thumb throttle and cut down the grip. Or use a half twist throttle and they come with a short grip.

These are 2/3x10 but Shimano have a multitude of other shifters/levers in the range.

I only got these so I could use an 11-36t cassette, I'd use a 6-speed cassette if I could find one with a broad enough range of ratios!

I liked Shimano's button shifters in both Tourney 6-speed and Nexus 8-speed the ability to shift just by tapping a drinks bottle on the button was amusing, but the 6 worked with the throttle because it was based on an over-shifter design.

Manual bikes need flashy gears but e-bikes just don't. We don't need close ratios, or many. It's disappointing that we still seem to be stuck with equipment for manual bikes.
If I had my way I'd have a 1x6 set up with a 10-50t rear cassette...
