But... the scale suddenly likes me. I'm down below 220 for the first time in 20 years. There are small rolls of skin where there used to be rolls of fat at the bottom of my belly. I live alone and get really bored in the evenings—so I snack. But I'm snacking on healthier, less fattening things. Total weight loss since Jan '13: 68lbs (18 of that twice).

That's fantastic! Possibly when you get bored in the evening, go on a quick bike ride instead of eating. Night riding is awesome, as long as you have good lights.

I do, I do. I ride every morning 18-20 miles. 645 miles for July. I was bummed out Monday (8/4). There was some foreign substance falling from the sky. I think it was imported from Seattle, they call it rain. So I rode today and spent ½hr cleaning the bike with a toothbrush and rag afterwards. Mucho road grit.

I have an 800 lumen flashlight w/bike mount and a fancy laser tailight (thank you ebay), but evening rides are difficult here. The wind sweeps down from the Sierra Nevada Mtns. every evening, 18-20mph, sometimes with gusts to 60mph. Makes it too nasty to ride. I have done a few, tho, just not very often. I've had the Roubaix for a month and already put 360 miles on it.

Does that wind blow at all times of the year, or only during certain seasons? It sounds nasty!

When I ride in the wind, I try to ride out into the wind, then home with it at my back. (Of course you don't always get to pick & choose!)

It blows pretty much year round. Some days it's only 6-8mph, no bad gusts. Others it's hellacious. There are some days (winter or summer) when there's very little wind in the evening. Occasionally a morning wind preceding or following a storm makes it too nasty to ride, but that's not very often. And no matter which way I ride, the wind is in my face. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya'.

I wouldn't want to ride the bike path after dark. It's where the homeless live. Most are harmless enough, but it takes just one that's not.

Often times I'm too tired to ride in the evening. A 20 mile ride earlier in the day is enough. But I get an occasional late afternoon ride in. That's when I usually get flats. Dunno why, just works out that way.

When I was younger I had a 29" chest and a 30" waist. Now I'm slightly overweight, by recumbent biking standards. If I really need to lose weight, I could shave my beard.

Peaked at 300 pounds about 7 years ago.
Getting a bike and learning to swim were major points in my turnaround.
I am hovering around 218 now; goal weight is 200.

Okay, you got me beat, and congratulations. I'm at 218 down from 269 with a total weight loss of 74 lbs. (Yeah, I know, the math doesn't add up.) 18 of those pounds I lost twice, but it's still weight loss. It's a lot tougher at 68 than when I was 38. I'm pounding the pavement (figuratively speaking) @ avg 120mi/week. Slowly but surely.

Has anybody lost weight just by exercising, not cutting food energy intake at all?

Yes.

When I was cycling around and about 10,000 km/year, I could eat whatever I wanted and would not gain weight. In fact, I had to eat what felt like quite a lot to keep from losing too much weight.

That said, "whatever I wanted" was quite high in fruit and veg because I like fruit and veg.

I lost around 20 pounds on a tour once all the while eating everything I could get my hands on. Amazing what pedaling a 100 pound rig up and down mountains over 30 days will do for the midline.

You can lose weight without dieting as long as what you eat is good, healthy stuff. I read somewhere that you cannot outride a bad diet and that makes sense.

Note: I have been fat but no more.

2014: 4,078 Miles–260 Days–333 hrs — Weekly Avg: 110

UPDATE: In Nov I was thrown off the Allez (read: stoopid operator error), fractured pelvis, subsequent DVT (blood clots) in both legs and lungs. During the two months recuperation I gained a little over 12lbs. Added a Vortritek 900R (German) recumbent trike

to the stable and have been working those extra lbs off, ever so slowly (I don't cook, don't always eat properly, and I like to eat). But I'm working on it.

2015 (Feb 13): 365 Miles—28 Days—40 hrs

That bent looks like the way to recover!! Check back as to how it goes.

I went from 193 to 135 (high school, 40+ yr ago) from October 13 to October 14 using dumb bells every other day, a bike on the other days and a food scale ALWAYS. A nutrition label calorie count is only accurate if you only eat one portion!!

Im 6'5 and when i started a car free lifestyle just about 18 months ago, i was nearly 300 lbs, 289 to be exact.

I had been chubby my whole life, and briefly slimmed down in my early 20's but i ballooned right back up by 24. I felt uncomfortable all the time and just overall unhappy. My weight and mental status are what drove me to stop driving. I felt like if i walked everywhere instead of drove it would help.
A buddy gave me his old bike when he heard my goals, telling me "Walking is slow, give this a spin"

Completely changed my life. I have been biking everywhere since that day, never even missing my car.

Now, 18 months later, i weight 185 and am working on building more muscle mass.

For those of you reading this trying to loose that weight, Just keep at it! some weeks it feels like nothing is happening, but as long as you stay consistent it will continue to melt off. I believe in you!

Yep. I'm fat. 5'10" 223 lbs. BMI = 32. I'm fairly muscular... but there is no denying I'm fat. I can be muscular at 170. I need to lose 50 lbs to be fit. I need to lose 30 lbs to be healthy. I'm on my way. I started the year at 237 lbs. I haven't done anything too drastic. Watching carbohydrate intake, but I'm not being a fanatic. All of the sudden, we have 3 drivers and 2 cars... I'm on the bike again... which is a good thing. I'm not car free... but most of my commutes from now on will be by bicycle (occasionally by a 50cc scooter.) I have nearly a perfect bicycle commute... 7 miles - 90 percent on a very underused MUP with some really beautiful stretches. 25-30 minutes each way... it's been fun. Rain can be an issue, not so much with the commute itself but with the time it takes put on rain gear and shoe covers. I'm hoping to lose 4-5 lbs per month for the next 6 months or so - it may take a little bit stricter diet and a bit more exercise than just the bicycle commute.

Cycling and complete avoidance of American fast food joints keep me from getting fat. I haven't been into a McDonald's in something like fifteen years. Glad to see that I'm not the only one, and that more and more Americans are rejecting their crappy "food."

Yup! 4 years of long workdays and frequent travel (~2 week long trips, then 2 or 3 weeks back in the office) eating out exclusively and lots of booze will do that to you. I've lost a good bit, but winter has made me gain some back. I look forward to getting back out on my bike SOON. Unfortunately, I seem to have a knack to get back to about 210 very easily. But down from 220, I'll take it. weight loss is a long term process. I'll be happy to get under 200 and maintain there.

I've been trying to get down to 200 since before the Clinton administration. I did drop from 269 to 213, broken pelvis, leg blood clots, and winter bumped that up a few lbs. These latest lbs have read the squatters act and are determined to fight me forever. I'm hovering around 218. Aging or not (69 going on a thousand) I still try to bike or trike every day.

2015 (Feb 25): 499 Miles—38 Days—52 hrs

Nope, never. Plan to keep it that way until I die. Growing up my dad had a gut and I decided at 5 years old I will never look like that.

6'4 215lbs, currently working on gaining weight.

Here's me at a triathlon this year:
Another reply to self post - latest weight is down to 150. Still want to knock off about 30 lbs. When I'm done training for an upcoming half marathon I'm going to start Matt Fitzgerald's Racing Weight Quick-Start plan. I already use his DQS for eating, and started seeing awesome gains in my performance.
