Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who cares?
KMC already makes an 11s chain with a master link for Campy.
If it is not compatible with 11s Shimano, you can be sure they will quickly produce one.

I just don't see having extra gears in between my current gears worth it when it costs more and needs to be replaced more often.

It's foolishness.

Then again, that's the 41 for you.
Well said. Very well said.

The more exotic it gets, the shorter the life of the part. But pro teams don't care as it's all free to them.

It always amazes me when a customer comes in with the "latest and greatest" and it's got a thousand or so miles on it and needs something replaced or something broke. You want to say "what's your point?" and then, "stay off the internet"...

I use calipers to measure the space between the rollers. A new Campy chain will measure about .200 inch, when new (compared to others that can measure .210-.215). When the roller spacing reaches .220, I put a different chain on the bike - usually one of three that I'm alternating. When the roller spacing gets into the .235-.240 range, then the chain is shot.

I's also made a plug gage from a 6mm hex wrench, ground down to a thickness of about .070 inch to use as a no-go gage. It that drops between the rollers, the chain is done.

Not trying to start anything, but I don't see this as such a big problem. Even if I have to change 3 chains and a cassette each year, it was well worth knowing I have the "latest and greatest." I mean it takes some serious mileage to wear these parts out. If I am lucky enough to ride my bike that much in a year, the fun and the exercise I've benefited from were well worth it. You can spend that kind of money just going to the bar a few times or spending a few days on the golf course. The maintenance costs are just part of the sport.
