Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Talk to me about... gloves!

So, I've been having some trouble getting good gloves. I had some Giant gloves a few years back that were pretty good. Didn't fit amazingly well, but the padding was pretty minimal, they didn't bother my hands. I left them on the bus one day and never saw them again. Next, the Trek gloves. Those fit fine, the padding was too much at first, but eventually it flattened out. Unfortunately, there was a poorly placed seam across the back of the glove that chafed my knuckles after a few minutes of riding. No good. Then I got some cheap Planet Bike gloves. They were the worst yet! Fit was crap, they're still not comfortable, and they also irritate the backs of my hands.

So tell me about gloves. Do you get what you pay for? What works for you? I'm looking at the Pearl Izumi Pittards Carbon Leather (padding) and Pittards Octane (no padding) as promising candidates. They look pretty good, no weird seams, minimal or no padding in reasonable places. But wow, the price is a step up from any gloves I've purchased before! So, is it worth it? Anyone know anything about these gloves in particular, or know of other gloves without seams across the back of the hand and intelligently designed, minimal or no padding? Thanks!

Pi something gloves from last year... hole in a month.
Maybe the pittards are better.

Personally I like specialized BG gloves the best.

I don't own a pair, but I tried on a pair of these (can't remember which model) one day at a shop and couldn't believe how perfectly they fit. Should have bought them. Also tried on a pair of Castellis that were a marvelous fit. Next pair I buy, I won't go cheap.

i've about given up on gloves, besides winter ones. they all last about a month before they either start to fall apart or my golden retriever gets hold of one and destroys it.

I had a Trek pair with Gel inserts that lasted 3 seasons. I've got some Louis Garnea (sp?) gloves that are very light and bulletproof. I have a pair of the crocheted backed type...hate 'em...too loose.

Just picked up some Segio (sp?) gloves.

My experience, I generally have 2 or 3 pairs in circulation, but like tires I view them as "expendable" in the long run. Try 'em on at the shop. If they feel decent, buy 'em.

I'm a fan of Fox racing gloves. They are mostly designed for off road use but I like them just fine for road cycling. Fox gloves come mostly without a lot of padding which is what I like too. My current favorites are Fox Incline gloves which are full finger, lightweight gloves which I think are most suitable for road use. I've had some short finger Fox gloves as well which were sturdily made but weren't padded.

Regards, Anthony

I like PI myself so far. I wish the bike manufacturers would sell under a different name.

My OCP friends would make fun of me if I wore Specialized gloves on my Giant bike.

+1 for Specialized BGs (got mine for $10 on eBay). I have the Gels for the summer.

For winter, I highly recommend Planet X winter gloves. Where else can you find a glove that is made of WindTex and is less than $10????!!!!!

I have a pair of Cannondale gloves. The padding is minimal, which is good for me. I found the ones with thick gel pads actually hurt more than they helped. The Cannondale goves are leather on the underside, and sheer lycra on the topside. They have lasted a couple thousand miles now.

I've been using Specialized BG Ridge for 21 months. Atleast 50 miles per week. I want to buy new gloves but cant find a good enough reason to because my BG Ridge still look good.

£20 from CycleSurgery when I bought my bike.

I bought a pair of Cannondale gloves, with pretty thick pads. They disintegrated after FOUR rides. Both gloves. The gel pads came out, the stitching inside started splitting etc. I couldn't believe it.

Here's another vote for Specialized gloves. Get the best you can afford. They fit great, last a reasonable amount of time, look cool... My favourite is a two year old pair, slip-on, with a leather palm and no velcro straps... BG Pro... they're on special at the Specialized site for $8... none my size

Craft. I've tried Giordana, Castelli, and PI, and Craft destroys them all. Not too much padding, but in all the right places. They've also been relatively long-wearing. You probably don't remember, but I think I was wearing them at the Columbia race.
