Cycling short versus Bib question....
It has been said before that Bib's are more comfortable for many compared to cycling shorts. For those that own both bibs and shorts in the same size from the same mfr., is the waistband of bibs generally more relaxed with the design intent that the straps of the bibs hold up the bottom section versus relying on the elastic waistband for retention? I am OK with shorts but do feel a bit of cutting in with the waistband and therefore am considering bibs.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Don't consider. Buy bibs. End of thread.

Bibs don't have a waistband - thus the straps. duh
As they say about bibs -- Once you try them you'll never go back. I have 13 pairs.

The elastic waist band on shorts never bothered me. The main advantage of bibs is that they will never slide down or twist around as you ride. Skinny people who have no hips often have a hard time keeping their shorts in place; bibs prevent that problem.

Note to the guy wearing the powder-blue bibs on the trail this afternoon: wear a jersey over the top. You looked like a fat Borat...

Campag,
Make sure you spend the $$ to get bibs with a good chamois- thats most important. Always fork over $$ for a good chamois

What's the difference between good & bad? That is, what can I look for when poking through bibs on the rack at the store? A particular shape to the pad, or type of stitching, etc?

I wear my shorts in the gym or on the trainer only.

Yup me too. I only wear my shorts on the trainer now (saving the bibs for the 'real' rides).
Bought my first pair of bibs last summer (2006) and a week later I went out and got myself a second pair.
It's bibs from now on for me!
To answer the original OP, yes, there is more room in the waist as the straps are used to keep them up.

I recently brought some bib's from PBK and they fit fine, except that the straps over the sholders tend slip off and I have to occasionally re-adjust the straps(Now I know what some women go through to adjust there bra's) I am contemplating making a strap to go across the chest to help keep the strap's in place? I take it from this thread that no one else has this problem?

Bibs only! End of discussion!
As far as chamois goes, I can't tell the difference. I have 5 different chamois (10 shorts/bib total), and I can't tell the difference.
If you can tell the difference, you'll have already spent your money. Shops don't take returns/exchanges for bibs, the only store that does I know so far is MEC (they have Descente, Castelli, and the good ol MEC shorts/bibs).
