Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zipp hubs vs. Dt Swiss?

I recently picked up a pair of race wheels- Zipp 360 tubular rims (used on 404's) laced to DT Swiss 240s hubs with Aerolite spokes.

I had heard some bad things about Zipp hubs (notably, durability issues), and the DT's were only 80 grams heavier for the set.

Will I notice an 80g difference in the hubs? Did I make the right choice by saving ~$200 and going with the DT's?

Here's a picture of my wheel-

I doubt you will notice the 80g while riding, especially with the weight at the hubs and not the rim. DT makes fine hubs, and I too have heard some sketchy things about zipp hubs. You probably made a wise choice.

Oh man, DT Swiss 240s hubs are spectacularly awesome. I LOVE mine. My LBS refers to them as "maybe the best hubs made today" (after I had bought a set elsewhere, not trying to sell me some).

I specifically built mine around DT Swiss hubs. Even Lightweight uses DT Swiss 240s hubs in one set of their wheels.

I doubt you will notice the 80g.

I've been riding Zipps on an everday basis since 2003. Only problem I've had with the hubs is that the finish on one of the front hubs started looking like crap from sweat hitting it. Haven't had that problem on the second set.

And haven't had any issues with the function of the hubs. YMMV.

I think what he is referring to is the hub bearing and the play after a few rides. Zipp does design their bearings to fail and claim that prior to this their is less tolerance= less friction.

And my point was in my experience, I haven't had abnormal wear. My 404's were bought in 04, and still have the original bearings, (although the rear hasn't seen much use since I started using a powertap)

The 303's that I used from 03-07, I replaced the rear bearings once, before the wheels were replaced under the crash replacement plan.

My current 303 tubulars are also doing fine, but have maybe 1,000 miles on them so I wouldn't expect an issue.

And as for designing the bearings to fail, I'm not sure that's accurate. They're designed where there's play in the bearing when they not loaded, and therefore feel sloppy when they're not weighted, but I don't think that necessarily causes excessive wear.

In fact Zipp claims it reduces wear:

I am riding a custom wheelset with DT 240s and so far they are awesome. The wheel builder swears that they are the best hubs money can buy. Everyone that I have talked to that has used them tends to agree.

I've put about 500 km on my DT Swiss 240's, they are the smoothest hubs I've ridden and no problems thus far.

I love the DT 240s on my custom built wheels too, very smooth. The lbs owner who built them for me has the same hubs on his $5k custom frame too. I think you got an excellent deal. 80g is nothing you will notice.

Zipp hubs appear to be crappy. I've needed two rear bearings in about 2000 miles on my 404s.

In fact, I think the DT Aerolite spokes and 240s hubs would make [IMO] a better wheel combined with the Zipp rim. You got the best of all worlds. [That is unless the hubs were DT 190 ceramic hubs, but those are quite pricey.]

I'm dealing with issues on an older Zipp hub right now. No big deal but the DT Swiss hubs are some of the best out there.

I've got at least 3500 miles on a set of 240s hubs. They are very smooth rolling hubs plus they are lighter than most hubs around. A big plus is that they are very easy to service.
