I was actually a geology major before switching to chemistry. Don't ask me for more details b/c I don't remember much. I think I recall the oldest crust being in the Canadian shield leading into Hudson bay. The east coast of the US is also on the North American tectonic plate, and there isn't much volcanic activity there, so yeah it's also quite old. Maybe that's why it's so boring out there compared to the Best Coast? IDK.
Fun Fact - coastal southern and central CA is actually on the Pacific Plate. The dividing fault is called the San Andreas and is very, very active. It's where we get our earthquake reputation from. But TBH, the earthquakes are way less problematic than fire - an omnipresent threat out here.

Our 3 day trial summer has come to an end. Snow/rain mix at the moment. Hopefully the precipitation rate remains fairly low as I'm wearing low top Converse. It's only a mile walk home though so NBD.

That is my major *****, and the reason I decided to stop racing. My last race was a total ****show.
We were alerted to the fact that we weren't in our own race but were starting with the 40+3 and Cat 3 racers, at the start/staging area. As a rule, the 60+ field is thinned by attacks, and though that field was certainly depleted, there were enough kids in the pack that it was still too many for a two-lane road with a yellow line rule. Had anyone alerted us to the fact prior, I know there were enough cars and people to provide a follow car for the various groups.
They knew my bell was rung, I knew my collarbone was broken, yet I was still allowed to drive 100 miles home. The broken ribs and the need for a chest tube were discovered later. At least USAC event insurance covered a good portion of the deductible.

What LAJ is describing sounds just like the Road Race I got taken out at last year. Almost why I don’t think I will ever do it again. Picture 80 cyclist in one lane with the yellow line rule. No where to move or attack. It’s stupid.

I knew it! It's those devilish manufacturers, making bikes that are fast and nimble, forcing pros to go ever faster.
But seriously, didn't there used to be a "patron of the peloton", who would scold riders when they went too fast for the conditions?

Also my coach told me to aim for 20' of time in zone when doing VO2 workouts - but I was also doing them twice per week which is taxing. 25' is doable, but tough.

it's a severity vs frequency tradeoff. if you deal with fire - it's major and a huge threat. but everyone on the east coast deals with crap weather, that includes hot/humid summers too. the other threats you mentioned are infrequent and pale in comparison to fire.

For sure zone 5. 5' at zone 6 is not really physiologically doable, certainly not repeatable. When I do these I am for like 115% FTP.
Also my coach told me to aim for 20' of time in zone when doing VO2 workouts - but I was also doing them twice per week which is taxing. 25' is doable, but tough.
