Got called out for riding my bike

Got my Coffee Bucks Grande Owe It To Myself Capo on a usual morning commute and sat down at a table outside to enjoy the drizz of this Portland morning. A guy walks up and says "Why do you ride such a nice old bike in the rain are you nuts?" I replied that its a great bike for it so I don't ruin my carbon EVO or Six13 Cannondales riding them in the rain. He replies that those bikes are nothing compared to this bike [Dave Scott Ironman Centurion with 7 speed Shimano 600/105] he was quit adamant about it so I nodded and began sipping on my chino again and watched the rain. I think I heard him utter "humph" and walked away. Ever had someone give you carp for riding your commuter in the elements?

I've never had anything like that happen. My thought is: at least it is being ridden and enjoyed, instead of collecting dust in someones basement. Its just rain.

I'm confused. Don't bike manufacturers build bicycles with the thought that they just might get wet while riding OUTDOORS?

Exactly ,because I do ride it in the elements I am more concerned with its upkeep thus it does get pampered like hand wipe downs that a sponge bath nurse would be envious of... well almost..

Ha, sounds like Portland problems. I'm lucky if someone even notices I rode instead of drove.

Heh, "Normally it's hanging on the Altar in my bedroom, but I ride it on Dave Scott's birthday if it's raining to get the dust off."

I have never received carp or any other kind of fish for riding in the elements but with the rain I rode in this morning I felt like a fish. haha

Nope..

Most people I meet just consider my old Colnago as a "blue bicycle". Very few think in terms of classic Italian racing bikes.

No doubt its racing career was long over by the time I bought it in 1982. Battered today, yes, but it has seen many years of hard use, and most of the people that know bikes recognise that is hasn't been a wall hanger.

I did wince a bit when I was pointing out growing rust spots on my nephew's bike and told him to bring it in at night, and he pointed out that my 40+ yr old bike had rust on it EVERYWHERE.

My new "rain bike" is a Titanium Litespeed Frankenbike, that cost less to build than most used frames sell for. And it still turns heads.

I don't see the problem. Kinda like getting chewed out by mom for eating candy before dinner (Caring).
Actually that Ironman is good to go rain, snow, sleet, nuclear holocaust.

Weird. For me, I think nobody in Falls City and very few people in Salem know what a Salsa Fargo is. The guy at work who rides a Surly Crosscheck might know though. He rides it in the rain, too. He just fixed it up with a nice pair of kitty litter panniers.

I would react with surprise and sadness to see an Ironman suited up with 600 being used as a rain bike. But I would also refrain from commenting since I wouldn't know the person treating such a fantastic bike with such little respect.

Never happened to me, but that could be because I don't like to ride in the rain.

Still, a little simple maintenance goes a long way if your bike does get wet...

So then ride the other bikes in the rain, since bikes are made to be used in the rain and you are more concerned with the upkeep of your rain bike. ...just messing with you, I get it. Ride a low end Schwinn Varsity though!

I'm assuming that guy drove to Starbucks?

I'm a cycling fan, not a bike fan. A good bike can add to the enjoyment of cycling, but only if you actually ride the damn thing.
