Shipping A Bike To Nicaragua?

A friend has a house in Nica and I want to take a FatBike from Bikes Direct down with me on my flight and leave it there. What should I know about something like this? Just ship it like personal luggage? Customs? Anyone with any experience?

Thanks

(should this be in the touring forum perhaps?)

It is also quite possible that Non-US airlines will have different fees and services than US airlines.

Thanks so much for the links. If I can pull it off I will purchase a fat bike from Bikes Direct and will keep it in its original box for shipping and will assemble in Nicaragua.

Avianca Airlines web site says they will ship a bicycle for free but I am a bit leery and will somehow confirm before flying.

Anyone with direct experience flying to Nica?
