Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The way I look at carbs, they're simply fuel, neither friend nor enemy. You just have to limit them to your amount of burn. If you don't? Well.... That Way Madness Fatness Lies. Ask me how I know.

Yep. Vingo is really good/comfortable/confident on the TT bike. We saw that in how he was attacking the first part of the course, before the climb even started.

You're seriously considering going to Baltimore to buy a bike to ride for a few days?

The climb flattened out prior to the finish, too, enough so that a strong rider would see an advantage on a TT bike.

We had a good ride. It was a smidge faster than ideal so I felt a bit like puking on a couple of the climbs. But with no rider left behind and a group of 16 with diverse goals, it was still a great ride.

After the ride, mrs datlas and I had a bento box lunch date at a local restaurant. We ate outside.

A few feet from us, a 40-ish year old woman and (her son?) 10-ish year old boy sat down. I heard the waitress ask “how are you today” and the woman answered loudly I am having a ******g bad day and I am about to lose my ******g job….” I didn’t say anything but felt like saying maybe her potty mouth in front of a young child is why she lost her effing job.

As you know, I have no problem with judicious use of profanity but on a downtown sidewalk with lots of people around and a young kid? I have a ******g problem with that.

Done well it should be as comfortable, and depending on things like wrists and elbows it can be better (my trainer bike is still set up with tri bars because it takes pressure off of them). It's obviously not a thing for sprinting, but it also only took me a couple of dozen hours to get quite comfortable not just with the position but with the handling as well. I'm also far from a deeply experienced cyclist, but over Covid I was really trying to get ready for tri again before a crash on my road bike took that away.

There was a gravel tri here and one guy used a tri bike on skinny tires. That stunned even me.

For fun, you can see the pic below at the link below. The description says it would be "tricky" but there's the pic.

One of my cycling club mates is doing the Mt Washington hillclimb this weekend. It’s a nasty climb, hard enough that even I have no desire to ever do it. He has done it twice before, and he is hoping to win his AG. I think he is in his late 60’s and can certainly climb as well or a bit better than me, so maybe he has a chance. Stay tuned.

I wonder how low of a gear I'd want for that.

Seems like it must not get ridden much outside of the event

I saw some bodybuilding bro the other day say that as far as carbs go, taters are better for keeping your weight down as they fill you up so you don't overeat. Eat any of the other carbs in your list and you ain't gonna look ripped anymore.

He probably wasn't a nutritionist though

I’ve never heard that approach. Personally, skinless chicken, fish, grass-fed beef, green & colorful veggies, lentils, and sweet potatoes are the secret to my awesomely ripped physique.

Carbs are fine in moderation but the American diet typically has too much. The simple carbs like HFCS and sugar are especially bad when not exercising. On the bike, a different story and eat them sugars as much as you like. Off the bike, just say no whenever possible.

I believe only one day/year allowed and cost for event is $$$$. And you don’t get to ride down!

I will stick with Whiteface, it’s not as nasty (8 miles at 8%) but can be ridden anytime and long/steep enough for me.

My company is headquartered in Rockville MD, and my boss made it clear he wants me to visit there about once a quarter. Since it's a couple hours from The Ancestral Home, I like to visit there when I'm Back East, but that means going for a week without a ride. PLUS, we're contemplating retiring in PA, maybe Pittsburgh, maybe Lancaster, so Mrs. GJ and I will likely want to stay in each of those cities for a week. It would be handy to have a bike at The Ancestral Home, so I could ride when I'm there, or take it along to Pgh or Lancaster.

Baltimore is a bit far to go from Rockville, though.
