12s chain (except AXS) fits on 11s cogs though, right?

12s chain will work on 11s cassette.
11s chain will work on 12s chainring.
11s chain will NOT work on 12s cassette.
The inside dimensions of a chain haven't changed since 9s. It's the outside that's seen a whole lot of narrowing - narrower pins, thinner plates, etc.

While the width between the inner plates may not have changed a lot, but 12 speed is not the same width between the inner plates as 9 speed. Rollers are narrower and so must be the inner plate spacing. There are several different outer widths on 12 speed chains, with the AXS being the most narrow. The AXS chain has rollers that are .006 inch larger in diameter, but the pitch is the same .5 inch. I've had no problem using the AXS chain with Campy 12 cranks and cassettes. Standard bike chains have a maximum roller diameter of .306 inch per ANSI #41 and the AXS has up to .3125 inch rollers per ANSI #40 .
I currently have two sram force axs drivetrains with Chorus 12 speed 48/32 cranks.
