My Rare Gitane Team Pro 1984 Build

Hi all
this is my Gitane 1984 team pro that is identical to the 1983 Gitane Team Edition where after the Campagnolo Bottom bracket shaft snapped on Lauren Fignon in 1982 during the Tdf the Gitane team went to all french components in 83.
so Gitanes top of yhe range bike in 1984 was a replica of the 83 team bike.
This is My Lauren Fignon tribute bike to his 1983 winning Tdf Bike.

The metallic blue, "bubble" decaled Gitane Team Pros of the 80s are among the most beautiful racing bikes ever made (IMnotsoHO). They dropped this look in 85/86 production bikes but brought it back in 87...and initially Systeme U including Fignon in 87 rode blue bikes before switching to white. I built up such a blue 87 Team Pro for my wife back in late 80s (the 87s were available as a frameset). I used mostly French parts...she still has it and rode it in 2019 Eroica. Several months back I found an immaculate 87 Team Pro frameset for myself after years of searching. The built out production Team Pros in 87 came with Campy C-Record but I'll be building mine with a first-gen Campy Chorus group that I have. The 87s are easy to spot as the internal cable routing enters from bottom of top tube. They were also made of Reynolds tubing (531P) instead of Columbus.

1984 Team Pro

I have had mine for over 20 years. It was the first bike in my collection. They are lovely bikes, but I don't think they are rare?

Sorry, non-drive side, was going for the scenery in the direction she was headed...Mavic SSC (starfish cranks, 851 derailleur, hubs), Modolo brakes, levers, stem, and bars, and Campy C-Record pedals. The 531P frame tubes “ping” when you flick with a fingernail.

The 84 Gitane Pro with the Columbus SL frame tubing had been my "Moby Dick" bike for many years now, and I still have not found one to add to my stable. Most that come up for sale out there are either the wrong size or beat to hell and rusty, never mind the high asking prices.
In the meantime, I will be content with my modded up, "Tout French" 84 Gitane TDF instead.......

...............But, if a nice 84 Gitane Pro framesef ever comes up for me to buy anytime soon, I suspect I would not hesitate to still get it and build it up with the Stronglight/Simplex/Spidel Group, I already have ready for it.

Beautiful frame!!!!
I look forward to seeing it built up. If you are going full Fignon tribute, you’ll need to sport his trademark blonde mane and glasses 😄

Fignon Team Pro tribute bike

Dear Addamsmith, please build this up with the correct Spidel/Simplex/Stronglight/Maillard component group. The 1983 Fignon TDF victory was achieved on the fully French outfitted bike. Congratulations on acquiring one of the most beautiful examples of French bicycle manufacturing!

Components for Gitane Team Pro

Absolutely!

I actually have a catalog for Gitane’s whole 1983 lineup for the North American market.

1983 Team Pro

Frame: Columbus SL Competition
Crankset: Stronglight 107 (Spidel) 42-52
Front der: Simplex SLJ6500
Rear der: Simplex SLJA522
Shifters: Simplex SLJ5068 (Spidel) braze-on
Chain: Sedisport
Freewheel: Maillard 700 (Spidel) 7-spd 12-18
Brakes: Modolo Master Pro
Bar/stem: Cinelli 1-R/ Cinelli 64-42
Seatpost: Simplex (Spidel) alloy
Saddle: Sella Italia Turbo
Pedals: Maillard (Spidel) alloy
Hubs: Maillard 700 (Spidel) SF/QR
Rims: Mavic GP-4 32 hole
Tires: Wolber Seta Competition tubular
Clips/straps: Cinelli/Alfredo Binda

That’s the whole listing from the catalog. Of course the actual 1983 team bikes may have had some substitutions, but it wasn’t until 1984 that the Renault-Elf-Gitane team went back to full Campagnolo Super Record.

Hope that helps & best of luck on the build!

According to the 1984 catalog the specs were the same for the 1984 version as you post here for 1983

Very nice Gitane(s) - to all pictured.

Was '83 the last French win in TdF? Almost 40years ago.

Back in the day two guys I knew from racing used that frame. Great riding bikes with excellent performance characteristics. Rare is not usually associated with the frame.

I'm wondering how this build is going.
it will be nice to see another Gitane Pro getting completed.
I'm building up an almost complete Gitane Pro I recently acquired from a fellow BF member.
Just need to build up the wheelset using 32H GL330 rims and Spidel 700 low flange hubs I recently found. I also have to find the correct pedals for it (Maillard 700) and I will have all the components I need to complete.
Tried to find a correct yellow turbo saddle for it, but they're like hen's teeth out there. The SLG Turbo I have in black will have to do.
