For me the number one benefit of bike commuting is that it gets me out on the bike every morning, by sheer habit. But after rigging up a convenient laptop carrier, I've been telecommuting from home more frequently and find myself missing that morning bike ride.

So do you ride in the morning anyway? Some other time during the day? Or skip it like I do?

I can't argue with that, and wouldn't want to if I could. Let's assume that the office gets mad if we're not online, so that would be after work, right?

If I want a pint and local fresh seafood I go to #1. If I want a coffee/cake/local fresh seafood I go to #2. Both are cool with people being online and chillin' in the sun while working.

Do a lunch ride. You'll get some miles and it will get you away from the computer for a while too.

I have not ridden a single mile that wasn't to get somewhere I needed to be in probably 30 years. About 40,000 miles going to work and back in the last 15 though.

Yeah, just a cuppa/coffee or a pint, the seaside if the weather is good and scratched/dented 5-year old MacBookPro

All student assignments are submitted electronically and get marked and returned electronically. I also run my research group by WhatsApp most of the time. I usually review grants/papers on the laptop.

I do teach in person though, which is nice as it can get intensely lonely at times.

For me if telecommuting or going to meetings walking distance to home, well, if I have time I'll go for an extra ride, if I don't I won't. I used to have time for up to an hour of riding at/instead of lunchtime, not for ages though, and haven't found myself w/ time to squeeze in extra weekday rides beyond the commute in quite a while. Even when I have recently lucked into some farther but local meetings (60-90 min ride instead of 20-30 to the office) about half the time I've had other things come up so I couldn't take advantage of those. Still appreciate the half of those I have been able to ride to.

i work for an old school business. i have to to be in my cubicle from 8:30am - 5:30pm, M-F, or i can look for a new job.

I voted have a ride during the day. I would usually try to get out for a short ride around lunch time. But I ended up going to lunch with the wife last time and not riding at all. Its rare for me to telecommute these days. Would be nice to have one or two days from home per week. Maybe I can get that if I end up moving down by you in the ATL area. My parents already bought a house a little north in Jefferson. I'm helping them to pack up now.

I don't know if it's unusual in this area or not - the team I'm on is pretty small and spread out in other states, and further. My boss is in another state, which in some ways poses some of the drawbacks of telecommuting. Probably some of the more technical code-slinging teams around here allow it.

I work for IBM and have telecommuted for about 10 years now.

I ride in the afternoons or in the evenings, depending on the time of year. It is my "get out of the house before I go crazy" time.

You tend to get a little isolated working from home and riding the bike "the really long way" to the coffeehouse or the taco stand is a great way to get some of that human interaction.

I only telecommute a day every other week or so. When I do, I usually skip the bike ride but will get a run in before work or at lunch.

I'm fortunate in that my company allows occasional telecommuting (full-time telecommuting would require a special arrangement), but typically I do it when I'm either really sick or the conditions outside are not even suitable for driving, so making up the bike ride is not usually on my mind.

I can telecommute one day a week, and can take additional days on request.

When I'm home, I take a morning ride that's about equal to my normal back-and-forth. Sometimes I'll take it at lunch, if the day is going to be busy and I know I'll need a break.

About half the time I go in anyway, since I'm much more productive with 2 25" monitors than a laptop screen. The rest of my team is a state away, and the people I interact with are all over the world, so I'm no more or less available at home. Most of my interaction is email or IM, and my desk phone is a softphone that rings on my laptop.

Also, if I plan on working from home, I have to bring the laptop. That's another 10 lbs in the backpack. It's bad enough I have to do that one week out of four when I'm on call.
