broken and tacked Ass Saver on the back (need to switch to a better solution... they are very limited in heavy rain/snow/slush)
+ Hacked Rear Deflector (normally meant for rear luggage racks), zip tied to the downtube = works like a charm AFAICT.

@bloom87, why not just use honest-to-goodness fenders?

AKA the fenders always end up rubbing on the tire. The special kind of « indestructible » plastic gets somehow warped and stays that way, etc. The stainless parts somehow end up rusting. We have a very harsh winter here.
My hacked front fender does a really good job and cost me around 0$.
For the rear, I'm going to end up picking up a Zéfal attach-to-seatpost fender and see if it's any useful.

Where is here? Please put your location in your profile? I've heard extreme cold is bad for some plastics.

Does anyone make fenders for 27" wheels anymore? I'd really like to put fenders on my 1983 Santana, but it seems really hard to find fenders that are that size anymore.

That is a really slick looking build, southpawboston. From the color(and matched pump), to the parts chosen, as well as a good fender fit, among other things. I'm looking forward to finished pictures. What do you think of Jeff Lyon's work? I rode with a guy a couple weeks ago who was riding a Lyon frame with a wishbone seat stay. Very nice bike, and way fast rider.

I've only ever seen one other Jeff Lyon in the flesh, and it was his "budget" model like mine-- a L'Avecaise. I was pretty impressed with the workmanship, enough to order this one. Some details give away that this is not a full-blown constructeur bike, such as the socketed dropouts and simple bridges-- these save time for the builder. But then there are all these other really amazing little touches that he does that point to him being a really high end builder. And his brazing is really beautiful. The paint is by Keith Anderson.

The difference in radius between 700c and 27" is a mere 4mm, so for "fender" purposes, they are the same size.

Thanks, Roger. The front fender needs work, it's a little short radiused near the bottom. The fender came new with a slight twist, which is difficult to resolve. One side looks perfect, the other doesn't. If I correct that side, the other goes off. I have plenty of time to tackle that, but the weather was nice for a photo op the other day, so it emerged from the dungeon for the first time.

@rootboy That Frejus is absolutely gorgeous! I love the color scheme.

@bloom87, have you been looking at the great "Bike hacks" by any chance? If not you should. Awesome, love the anti money approach (no offence intended to anyone, to each his own).

I've been a volunteer at a local bike coop for more than 5 years so I've learned a few tricks.
@rootboy that setup is strikingly beautiful, even if i'm not a fan of baby blue !

Most everything is done. Now, it's time for fenders. Fairly sure I want to use narrow chrome fenders, but looking for feedback. Chrome, black, or hammered? What would you suggest, seeing as the OE stainless ones are outside my budget? It's a 650B, so I'll be doing some adjusting with 26" fenders.

I think black would look fantastic, but I can see hammered aluminum on the bike as well.
