Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Damn bee got hooked up in sunglasses and helmet strap and stung me. Could not stop fast enough. Had not been stung in a very long time and could have done with out it.

I had a wasp fly into my helmet vent... I felt it get stuck and start moving around... when I started slapping my helmet trying to get him out...

Stung the **** out of me before I could get my helmet off... was not pleasant.

I was panting - er - breathing with my mouth open. Bee flew into my mouth and stung my tongue before I could spit him out.

My tongue inflated like a football, and for 3 days I could only eat/drink through a straw, and everything I said sounded like "gorp frowkh bzuh bah"

I found a butterfly knife while climbing a large hill, got hit by a car, no bee stings yet though.

Was riding one day on a long MPT (San Gabriel River Trail, for those in SoCal), saw an extremely attractive girl on a big hardtail mountain bike, rode up to her and suggested we work together taking pulls (very windy day), she then proceeded to hand me my head. Till today, I still cannot fathom how she could ride that fast. For a long time after that, I was deathly afraid of attractive ladies just tooling along on any kind of bike.

Been stung a few times by bees/wasps, but the most unusual incident was on a ride outside of Detroit at the intersection of Ann Arbor Rd. and Ann Arbor Trail. I had just crossed Ann Arbor Rd., stopped to check my map, and started up again. Suddenly I saw something flash by my face and the bike was knocked out from under me. Glancing to my left I saw a car wheel hit the curb on the other side of the road and fly up in the air before bouncing off across a vacant lot. Then looking back at Ann Arbor Rd. there was a Chevy Vega sitting in the middle lane missing a rear wheel. The driver said he'd been going about 50 mph when the wheel fell off so that's probably about how fast it was going when it barely skimmed the top edge of my front bike tire. Amazingly the front wheel was only slightly out of true and I was able to continue my ride.

A hawk "attacked" my helmet.
No injuries or damage to the helmet, but I nearly fell off the bike from the surprise.

Just saw a guy while I was cycling this morning who was jamming out on a MIDI electronic guitar while walking down a forested MUP. It was pretty weird, but funny.

Oh, both.

She'll drop my a$$, I'll kill myself to catch up, she'll drop my a$$ again. Quite humiliating, If you ask me.

A few times this past week I've been having skunk issues. There is a baby skunk who lives on my normal route who likes to sneak up on me. I don't see him, then next thing you know he's rearing up and looking like he's going to spray and I scramble away hoping to not get sprayed. I've been lucky so far.

A deer burst out of the bushes ten feet to my right, ran alongside me on the side of the road (as I grabbed for my brakes), then darted across the street in front of me and an oncoming car. Fortunately, it managed to get away without getting hit.

A young coyote pacing me up a hill on the other-side of a guard rail a short distance before sunrise.

Got chased by a bull. He jumped a 4 ft fence and started coming after my group and I. Luckily we had just gone down a descent, so we stayed in our big gears and laid down the fastest sprints we've ever done. Don't underestimate how fast bulls can run!

Wow, other than getting hit, nothing that weird! My boss has HORRIBLE luck on his MTB though. Paced by a wild boar, very sketchy encounters with bulls and momma cows. Never when I am around, always when he goes solo. Hope that guy makes to to 50!

I've cycled four 1200 km randonneuring events ... lots of strange things happen out there in the dead of night in the middle of a 1200K randonneuring event. Some real ... some not.

I got my first ambulance ride and a brief stay in an ER on Memorial Day after I bonked due to dehydration. Not recommended.
