Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, that rider certainly has a soft spot for animals. I like that.

If she was so worried a bout the rabbit, why not stop right away to check on him rather than waiting till he deep froze in the rain?

Just wondering. I ran over a squirrel's tail the other month... same way. I had no chance to avoid the bugger and barely missed his torso as it was. I kept going.

I ran over a possum the other night, didn't stop to check the damage. He just trundled right out in front of my rear wheel, missed the front wheel. I've hit several animals with a car, but never with a bike before.

I ran over a a rat on the MUP on my commute home last summer. It was very dark and the small rat jumped from an unexpected location which was mostly paved. I knew it was a rat because I saw the tail. I thumped it with my front tire. I was hoping that I just ran over the tail and I went back to hopefully find nothing. Much to my dismay I must have chopped the poor thing in half. Someone had removed it from the MUP, but as it never rains in CA in the summer, I had to look at the stain for 3-4 months until the first rain. Every time I ride by that spot I feel bad for the poor rat.

A rabbit once bolted in front of me on an early morning commute. My superhuman stopping power endoed me, resulting in a fractured elbow and road rash. The rabbit didn't stop for me.

Hosenfefer indeed.

I was in FL in feb last year, near Venince, and was riding the MUP along the intercoastal waterway. I went as far south as I could from Nokomis and not even 1/2 mile after turning around to head back northbound, a 3-4' iguana darted infront of me running from the water/bushes to the brush/woods on my right side. Nearly hit him and scared the **** out of me.

I ran over a rabbit once - the kkk-krunch sound as both wheels ran over him was surprisingly, well, crunchy.

Have mentioned this before... Had a young gopher decide to run across the MUT as I was cruising about 18-20 MPH. Timing was bad. Ran straight into the bladed Mavic spokes of my back wheel. Made one revolution around and nearly lost his head. Stopped to check to confirm he was dead. Bent the RD cage and wheel a little.

My brother and I were riding together in Miami last year and a 4' iguana darted out right between his wheels. I was following, and watched him thump over it and send it flying off in to the road without his tail. My brother thought it was a rock, I was laughing so hard I couldn't tell him it was an iguana. He's lucky the spines on its back didn't puncture his tire.

A real roadie would have eaten the warm, still quivering carcass and then finished the intervals.

I feel sympathy for the rabbit. Not so much the rat.
