Yes this new red one since because of a faulty chris king headset (I banned this brand for all my road and my mountain bike projects regarding headsets ) it cracked the head tube and then I had it rewelded but it will have new paint applied but I decided to give him the frame as a present since the price I paid for this frame was reasonable and that I know that he will restore and make one hell of a build with it and since that he always makes fair prices for me forall my builds and upgrades.

What happened? I've only got one of these, 1 1/8" threadless, and I recently put it on the Trek 950 (in this thread). Is the issue that the press fit OD of the cups too much for the headtube to overcome? Or is it the design, like its not a straight wall sleeve or something? I wonder if it is isolated to just 1" headsets?

Thinking about that makes me think about my Ironman. That headset (was a 1" threadless, high quality alloy Japanese but can't recall which brand) was so tight I thought I might crumple the headtube like what happened to Gugie's Grand Sport.

The CK 1 1/8" that went on the 950 seemed like just the right amount of resistance, maybe just a hair less than I am used to. However, I'm very sad to hear of this, if nothing else for how unexpected such a serious incident that is to have the headtube crack on a headset install. Wowza.

I think it came out pretty cool. For those faulting the handlebar tape, I had some Amazon bought silver that craps the bed. Leaves bulges.

My older son rolled his eyes at this tape. Oh well.

The data: RSX everywhere but the crank and FD (no brazeons in stock). Surprisingly great little group.

When my bike tech was installing this chris king no thread head set 1inch it cause a crack at the bottom of the head tube , maybe the headset was not correctly reamed and probably the cups too much for the headtube to overcome. My grandis and my coppi have each a threaded campy record headset installed, my Vetta Team got a stronglight X14 threaded headset installed as a replacement because the original one was damaged. On my two Trek MTBs 6500SLR and 6700 SLR I have had installed by my bike tech the Cane Creek 110 EC34 as headset and on my Giant Bonco I have had installed by my bike tech the Cane Creek 40 EC34. My Jamis had a Cane Creek S1 headset and my Peugeot racebike has also a Cane Creek headset and never had any issue with those.For the Trek Fuel 100 , again I will stick with the Cane Creek 110 EC34 and for the Cannondale CAAD4 Cane Creek 40EC30 headset. Your japanese headset could be either a Tange Levin or a Aheadset or a Dia Compe.

There's no hope for me, another cool bike came up locally and of course I had to grab it.

I need to be in this group. During the pandemic I grabbed many cheap old French bikes and frames and built them up with decent parts. I gave several away but I still have five Peugeots from 1962 to 1988, two Gitanes (one in 531), and a Follis (also 531j. On top of these I lucked into three vintage frames (Paramount, Holdsworth, and Mercian) in my size, all in 531. Plus a Masi, a custom Rodriguez, a couple custom Stevensons, which are not ever going anywhere. I need to make at least two, preferably three, of these disappear . . . . I am thinking the non-531 Gitane and the 1962 Peugeot, but it's like I'm frozen in indecision.

Sold another one tonight... this is one I really liked too. When faced with the choice of keeping one small bike, the 730 Multitrack is the easy winner over this.

Trek 820 that I picked up for $10. After a good cleaning, a few parts swapped from the stash, and $32 in parts it sold for $140.

Thanks to only interest and no follow-through, the fleet (and component count) has stagnated these last few weeks. Like trying to start a recalcitrantly-carb'ed engine in the winter, such is the Oregon weather. It's kinda sorta slowly getting better on an optimistic average, but the low temps are still in the 30s...thus not conducive for interest or purchases. I guess it's almost tax day, too.

As it stands, we have a shuffling in the fleet regarding which ones stay. Here are their statuses:

Keep:
1985 Trek 620 - Fender and all around conquerer bike.
1989 OS Paramount - My to-sell-or-not-to-sell bike met no real interest even at a great price, which is just as well, a recent group ride inspired me to get my head right and put the fastest, techiest stuff on this frame, so now it wears Dura-Ace 9000 with Di2 shifting after a fork de-raking and it is STELLAR.

Probably Keep:
1982 Trek 720 - I know, I know, I KNOW. Why is this even here??? I am a builder, so there's a bit of "onto the next" but also why not send it along to a new loving home for them to experience? It's otherwise its sublime self, just don't ask it to do full-gas group rides with lots of punchy hills.

Who Knows:
1983 Trek 560 - Finally built this up with all silver components that allows me to fit it without it looking awkward--it actually looks quite fetching. Clean and simple, like old times. I actually put in a bit of work to really get it dialed in with the right components. It was a lot of work for "just" a 560. Total sweetheart to ride! Just, so good.
1984 Trek 620 - A victim of overlapping too much with the other 620 and the 720, plus "its" wheels are now on the 560. And after taking the 9070 Di2 off of it (brief build-and-test), it's just a frameset. Looks great with silver components, but it needs good wheels. Will rest for a bit unless I figure a build to move it along.

Still working to sell the Nishiki, Shogun, and Trek 510.

OS Paramount, before swapping down to 0.75mm narrower GP4000 SII 28mm tires (from GP5000 32s) due to rubbing on the calipers. Weighs a hair under 20.0 lbs and more than held its own on a second hammerfest-level group ride.


Just enough rise setting in that Technomic stem to get the bars to a comfortable height while still looking good. Riding on RH 32mm tires and Brevet rims. BL-L331 levers, 7402 calipers, 7700 shifters, 7410 crankset, and 7700 RD/FD. Time to get this out on a longer, leisurely ride!

Here's by bit to encourage moving things along.

I actually did move two along last week. One was the Raleigh Technium I put way too much into and the other was Raleigh Racing USA Prestige I got as a project bike. Managed to move that one on before I spent too much on it, LOL!. And I did keep the Superbe hubbed, Araya red label wheels off it. That gives me bother tubular and clincher options now for my beloved Opus III.


I got $460 for this one, easlly less than half of what I put in it.



$225 for this one, I may have just about broken even for once. By coincidence this has the RX wheels I took off the Raleigh above.



And this is listed locally too. It's my fastest bike next to the Softride but just no fun to ride for me. Several calls but no one that it was the right size for yet.

The logical side of me says I should move on a few more.

This is one but I really hate the thought. It's so cool looking, the ride isn't bad, and it's the European equivalent to the Kestrel. First production monocoque frames type thing.


Swapping on the Cane Creek wheels really made this one feel better on the road last year. I just don't like the feel of the Kyserium SL wheels and have at least three sets now as "spares" I've taken off other bikes.


There is also the Holdsworth Professional I picked up here last fall to use as I rehabbed my knee. I wound up barely riding it. Part of me is thinking move it along or donate it. The other part is like, this is pretty cool and needs to be turned back into a drop bar racer. Hmmmm, which side will win?

One thing for sure on this one. Those cork grips are slippery as hell under cycling gloves. Never could seem to maintain a proper grip.

One down, a few dozen to go....... went to a good home. A young couple with vintage VooDoo MTB's that were in the market for a hybrid. I built this up from a frame I got off Ebay UK, it was a UK only model. They were both like kids on Christmas morning to find a basically brand new VooDoo hybrid and one that had never been sold in the US, they drove 2 hours one way to get it and it fit both of them perfectly. I have a feeling there will be some arguments over who gets to ride it first when they get home LOL. Feels good when somebody appreciates your creations,

I'm re-evaluating my space in the garage yet again. Had a really good cleanout one night this week, and it is motivating me to get through even more. I don't think I want any bikes on the garage floor. I think I've got about 9 hooks for bikes. I'm cheating a bit, because I technically have 7 'sets' of hooks for 1 bike (so 14 hooks for front/back wheels = 7 bikes) but I'm using single hooks for frames. I think I have enough room for 11 bikes total. So some are definitely going to go.

I think the PX-10 is going to go. I think the Trek 600 is going to go. It rides so nice, but for whatever dumb reason I like looking at the green Trek more. I just love that color!!

Either the Trek 990 or the 750 are going to go. They are just too redundant. I'm putting drop bars on both and will test ride. If they are both awesome, I'll get rid of something else to keep them both. I love the idea of a 'do everything' adventure bike.

The Gitane will stay for now, but if I find one in a slightly larger size, I'm going to move the smaller one.

We are going to get down to 11. While from a technical standpoint, it doesn't help that my son now has 3 bikes (the Midget, the Specialized Crossroads, and the Peugeot PXN-10), but it does mean he is catching the bug. I think he has a total fascination w/ pedal cages.

I deleted my adds for 3 bikes a few months ago and stopped keeping them so clean. Man, they are nice riders -- Superbe Pro '86 Cannondale; Cyclone Full Vitus 172 Grand Jubile; and a 1985 Ironman. I looked hard and long for all three of them and kinda convinced myself that it was ok that they stay with me forever -- I have hooks. Then I rebuilt an off topic bike to do a ride I wish to have never signed up for and have now run out of hooks and I also have a used boat to work on in my bike space. So, the adds went back up two weeks ago and I received interest in two of them, followups on both, and one appointment for tomorrow.

Well, I'm down one. Pumping the tires on my '78 Grand Jubile, lowering the seat for normal people, and riding it one last time in front of the house made me question my decision.
Young guy, owns a 1922 house, didn't have a bike til today, AND he used the word "friction" when I asked him if he knew how the Moto shifted. -- he didn't but he had read something about it

I put the bike in the stand and showed him how to shift it. I lowered the seat a bit more and off he went. A bit shaky but it fits him so much better than me and he is stoked. Everything will be ok.

I just got an offer on my Raleigh and accepted . It was too small for me but I had been riding it since 2016 . Recently I just want bikes that fit and I have plenty that do. Next........who knows ? Joe , downsizing in California
