1987 Pedal Choice for Appel Frame w/C-Record
Restoring a 1987 Mike Appel, new old stock, white and red. White frame, red decals. Campagnolo C record group set. Thoughts on aesthetics of Look PP 66 pedals in red and white vs C-Record clipless or C-Record with straps. Easier to ride the Looks, which are also much cheaper. But will be ridden very sparsely. Thx

If you don't mind slightly newer clipless, Look Carbo Pro's came in red and are much more attractive than PP66 IMO.

the Look made and Campagnolo branded pedals came in 1988?
this was the time when Look was the de facto peloton pedal.
Later Campagnolo would license the Look mechanism and make their own. Must have really hurt to do that, in decades before, Campagnolo dominated the patent applications.

Campagnolo SGR pedals are period incorrect. A diabolical product chosen only by the most committed aficionados sacrificing weight, form and function for blind brand loyalty, or forced upon third tier professionals who lacked the results to make a stand against them.
That Campagnolo survived the SGR pedal gives me hope they can survive first generation Super Record Wireless and their current absence from the Men’s and Women’s World Tour.
Apologies for the thread drift, but SGR pedals deserve an allergic reaction.

Down to Look PP66 and clipped C-Record (5-8x the cost of the Looks)

The red and white PP66 Course didn’t appear until the 1988 catalogue, with only the white and black PP65 and all black PP75 appearing in the 1987 catalogue.
The PP66 may have become available during the course of 1987, but in any case I think the red and black PP76 Carbon (also 1988) would be a more fitting choice for a C-Record equipped racing bicycle of the era, if you can find them. Much better aesthetically too, atmo.
Great frame, by the way. Looks fantastic and good to see it being brought to the road.

…agree. The PP66 aesthetics don’t really line up with C-Record. Better with SR.
The PP76 look great and appropriate. Between those and the c-record clips

In any case, Appel never sold complete bikes, just frames, so anything you choose would be appropriate.

IMHO pedals saddle and bars are personal choice items. If it's a rider use what you what you like and have on your other bikes. I pretty much use Spd style pedals, some shipmano but mostly Wellgo, that way I don't have to worry about what shoes for what bike

+1 to another vote for the Look Professional PP75 or fudge the period-correctness for the Red/Black LOOK Carbon PP76 (available in '88 I believe). Even by '86, the all-black PP75 had overtaken the earlier red/white PP76 pedals. They're fairly heavy, but offer more cornering clearance and a bit stronger retention spring. The red-white pedals might be too matchy-matchy.

Look Pedals…
I think these are late 1980s or very early 1990s…I put an identical pair on a new Bottecchia in March 1991…because the Campagnolo (non-SGR) were more expensive and heavier.

1988 PP66 Course. PP76 Carbon red with black back plate was top of the range at the time.
