I know riders who will actually grab you by the jersey and physically remove you from the line. That's how important it is to us to NOT have to deal with you.
Elitist? OK, I'll go with that since we've worked hard to get to the elite level, and we want to train not teach on Tuesdays.

on training rides one is expected to hold a good line , no ? I bet the
paceline is looking ahead and expecting 'normal lines to be chosen and
to account for traffic, -not the real closed course line-, but a practical, fast one nonetheless'
if not,
then what are you training for, starbucks ?
ride the freakin bumps. just cuz it's bumpy doesn't mean it's hurting anything
avoid those bumps and potholes which could apparently flat or throw someone down
announce those to the group
anyhow, what-evah. you announce "we're going to yell at you"...
well then act like a badass and ride like one. if bumps upset you, fail.

I got yelled at on my first group ride with the "big boys". I was taking a pull up a moderate-grade, moderate-length hill when I pulled off to the left rather sharply and without warning. As it turns out, that's the hill that everyone attacks on and I totally cut off one of the better riders. I got yelled at, very loudly and very repeatedly. But boy, did I learn how stupid it is to make any sudden movements like that when riding in a group.
I apologized, and never made that mistake ever again. Had nobody said anything, I would inevitably have done the same thing again and, potentially, caused a crash.

I was thinking about this thread while riding today. It made me yearn for those long summer evenings when the local hammerhead ride leaves from the Hippodrome Theater in downtown Gainesville promptly at 6 pm every Tuesday and Thursday. They roll out right past my house. On occasion I ride with them. Sometimes I see them go by and wish I was with them. The book "Ten Points" is a must read for those out there that don't have a clue about what these rides are all about. The rides in that book are a bit more organized, but the intrinsic nature is identical.
Like every winter season I feel that I am completely out of shape. There is something about cooler weather that makes me go really slow. Perhaps I am part bear and need to hibernate every winter. I don't ever feel "right" riding until it gets to at least the mid 80's F and only then if the humidity is high. It's a good thing that I live in Florida. I love summer riding down here.
This Fall/Winter season I have been logging almost all "base" miles as part of a program for losing weight. The losing weight part is going very well, but it is going to be hell to pay to get my endurance power back to where it was. On the other hand I have felt the same way every winter season for the last gazillion years, and yes I am that old. I'm older than Pcad by a few!

Making a kilometer blurry
unless someone is almost taken out, then the 'repeatedly' part is BS on the 'better' riders part.

Reminds me a bit of my "fat" days, racing one crit a year at 220 lbs, in a cat 5s (after my Cat 3 retirement). In one cat 4/5 crit, a guy bounced off my shoulder and nearly crashed, and a couple guys gave me crap like I pushed him. I sat up to get back to them and asked if they'd like to see what it looks like when I push a guy. At 6'4" and 220 lbs (lots of that from the gym -- some from Oreos), they shut up. Still, I was pissed off and pushed my way back up front through the middle. F***ers.

Elitist Snobs
If you don't want anyone to ride with you, just say so. On second thought, your riding style will take care of that. On any given day, some guys are faster than others, I would like to see how you handle that. Does every rider in your group ride at max speed exactly the same pace? Heaven forbid someone have a bad day. Kill them now. I understand training, but quite the elitist post.
I believe everyone who rides has dropped a group on a good day, been dropped on a bad one. As was stipulated earlier, the way to get better is to chase those faster than you. Interesting speeds posted on this forum as well as never giving anyone the consideration of blowing up.
I learned to ride an echelon as a newbie in my first century. Some yelled, some directed, one individual who was slightly older, wiser and more experienced coached me. It turned out, he was one of the strongest riders on the day. It's interesting in every part of life, cycling, boxing, golf, work, etc., that the level of a person's character will speak out and inform those around them just who they are. Where's P-cad when you need him. Just harden the f--- up.
