My empirical tests in Brazil have, I'm afraid, been inconclusive. Toilet water spirals clockwise whilst in the sink, it spins anticlockwise. But nothing works very well here.

I believe the Coriolis effect is negligible until you get to the scale of a large storm. So which way the water flows in toilets is affected only by the shape of the basin and the angle of the jets. Same goes for sinks, baths etc.

And so much for the mysteries of physics by the unwashed.

However .... if a car is approaching from behind and I use my right arm to signal a right turn, I have to be very careful to make sure my body is not blocking a lot of the driver's view of my arm. I wave my arm a good deal ... similar thing with cars turning left from the far side of the road, worse as the number of lanes increases.

I do it because I don't trust rivers to understand standard (US standard ... again the Brits have to do their own thing, and get it all wrong ) hand signals, with a 90-degree raised forearm indicating a right turn. "Why is that idiot waving? I am going to pass him on the right!"

Yeah ... try grabbing the brake, thinking it is the clutch, and see how well everything works.

Ah... ok, I just figured it out, thanks. I thought rolloagain (sorry) was on a bike with brifters (which I've never used). I was confused, not them.

In my early car driving days I almost put everyone on the front bench through the windshield of a friend's automatic car when I stomped on the 'clutch' to change gears (super wide, super sensitive power brake pedal).

Every time I switch from my car (manual) to my wife's (auto) I accidentally brake-check whoever might be behind me at the end of my street.
