Growtac Equal disc brake calipers

Hi Folks,

My (used)bike came with Shimano SLX hydraulic brakes and they worked fine for a while.
Then the front caliper started leaking a bit of oil on the pads/disk.
The result was the usual noise, shuddering and poor braking.

Rather than rebuilding the caliper, I replaced them with Growtac cable-actuated calipers.
These are quite strong and can lock up the wheels with only modest pressure on the brake levers.
Modulation is quite good, similar to what I had with the hydraulics.
The calipers were fairly easy to setup, and both pads on each caliper are adjustable.
Time will tell how long they are good for, though they appear to be well made.

Am using Avid SpeedDial SL brake levers which are very smooth with essentially no play.

For me, the price is fair for good working, easy to adjust, durable brakes with no oil leak issues.

Thanks and good health, Weogo

I have the Paul klampers. There is a review comparing the Growtac Equal, The Paul Klamper and the Yokozuna by Path less Pedaled.

Troul, I wish you many leak-free miles!

Rick, Enjoy those Klampers! Yep, I watched that video, and others, and read several articles.

On the Growtacs, the rubber covers for the outer brake adjustment ports do look losable, but mine are still there.
It looks like a small machine screw could go in there, if needed.

Thanks and good health, Weogo

So, do both pads move on these later iteration cable disks or just one?

Hi Tungsten,

On the Growtacs the inner pad is fixed, only the outer pad moves, and
yes it bends the rotor over slightly to contact the inner pad.
I think the Paul Klampers are the same.

Thanks and good health, Weogo

$365 for some single pivot cable actuated brake calipers.

Modulation is quite good, similar to what I had with the hydraulics.
Hold up- modest pressure locks up both wheels, but modulation is quite good?

.

The Paul Klampers work the same. Even though Paul states to use old school brake cable housing. I use the Yokozuna Reaction brake cable housing.

Dinosaur tech. OMG.
TRP Spyres for life for my Rohloff14. I have Jagwire compressionless cables, back and front with my also glorious SA dyno drum brake.

the ole bending of the paperclip trick.

Wonders how many times the bending can happen before it impacts things...

When my calipers leak, I just replace the caliper. They're fairly priced.

My rohloff equipped bicycle came with spyres. They are weak compared to the Paul Klampers.
