i bought a used Ciocc frame that has some pretty beat-up paint.
i'm thinking of having the paint stripped, the frame chromed, new logos put on and then build it up.

This is what I am working on at the moment. It's an old Specialized Allez SE that used to be red. A very beat up ugly red. I played around with a few ideas but this looks good to me. I have a set of blue specialized decals that match the blue on the bike just waiting to go on once I finish the color coats. When I originally picked these colors I didn't have any blue on any of my bikes. Now I have three.

Retinato
If I had a steel frame and could paint it any style, I think I would go old-school Italian with a retinato style paint job. Retinato is where you use 2 different colors for the main triangle, and then you blend them together along the top, seat, and down tube using a cross-hatching pattern, and leave the rear triangle solid - hard to describe, but here is a perfect example: a blue & white Pogliaghi. I've seen hardly any retinato-style paint jobs in the past 20 years, but it used to be a very popular option with Italian steel-framed bikes back in the 70's & 80's. Just pick your two favorite colors.
I had a retinato painted Faggin with Columbus tubing back in the mid-80's that was painted exactly like that Pogliaghi, but mine was red & white. I miss that bike, it was like a two-wheeled Ferrari.

Steel is real, baby!
There are so many good choices, it'll be very hard to pick out ONE.
Is your steel frame going to lugged, or TIG welded?

I'm partial to panels like on this Waterford, although it would look better with traditional geometry and an unpainted stem.

I agree with the two panel and the chrome! I think that is the iconic look of racing steel bikes. I've got that at the top or my list. But, i really like the way some of the metallic paints look- at least in the photos. I can't find the two panel with metallic frame AND the chrome at the moment, though.
