Yesterday, not today. It takes me a day to mess with Mrs. C's photos to shrink them.
A truncated version of our "three-county ride" -- it was colder than it looked with that low near-solstice sun. The Niagara Escarpment makes a big C- or G- shaped curve here, so we are looking across to Rattlesnake Point -- behind us and to the right would be Mount Nemo. We actually do have rattlesnakes in Ontario, but not here. The shy, timid, and endangered Massassauga lives in a narrow range along the south curve of Georgian Bay, 100-odd miles north of here.

The bike is our C & V steel Santana tandem from 1989, tarted up a bit with Ergo and Look/SPD. Oh, and illegal UCI World Champion stripes.

I was starting to think we weren't going to have anymore good riding weather this year, but today turned out to be beautiful. I slept until nearly noon, had some lunch, and then got out for a nice ride between Hillsboro and Forest Grove. This was my first ride on my recently built Fausto Coppi Reparto Corse, and between the great weather and the joy of a "new" bikeI decided to break off from my familiar route to explore some new roads. I was rewarded with great views.



The panoramic shot there obscures the view of Mt. Hood, which was my constant companion throughout the ride thanks to the clear skies. You can see it a bit better in the shot below, but not nearly as well as you could in person.

Well, the bike is very stiff. Even with 28s the ride was a bit harsh on chipseal, which this route had a lot of. Once I got it on smooth pavement it was great. It's definitely built for speed. It's a shame that I'm not. The steering is very quick, but it's nice and smooth in turns. In spite of my gravitational challenges, I'd say it's a good climber -- it didn't feel like the bike was fighting me going up hills. Overall, I definitely like it.

Inspired by a birthday card I had once given my dad years ago where the front of the card said “Happy Birthday” with a picture of guy driving his car looking in his rear view mirror seeing the grim reaper reaching out for him.

I got out for a quick spin around town to pick up a bunch of coffee for gifts. Four pounds more or less filled the handlebar bag.

45 miles from home yesterday to the Madera side of Millerton Lake. I reached my yearly mileage goal of 3,660 miles, averaging 10 miles a day. I usually reach that some time in October, but with Covid-19 putting a damper on most group rides and a summer and early fall with unhealthy air quality due to the California wildfires, I was glad to get this much riding in. Foggy and 38° at the start. clear and around 50° when I got home.

Well, 2020 has come to an end for me for riding. Was 48 degrees today with some wind so off on the Nishiki Maxima I went for 20 or so miles. It was a fun ride until 2 minutes from home. As I was coming down a slight downhill 2 minutes from home in our neighborhood, one neighbor's dog decided to take chase. He had been a problem earlier in the year but they had gotten their electric fence fixed. Well, pavement work in November on the corner I was quickly approaching took out part of that fence and the neighbor hasn't fixed it. Out on the road comes the black lab. I yelled his name a couple of times to try and slow him down but it didn't work. As he got to within 6 inches or so of my leg and growling loudly I reached down with my right hand for the water bottle and hit him square between the eyes. Then all hell broke loose ....

He either hit the back of my bike or the front drifted off the side of the road (the dog had been pushing me over to the right). The handlebars pivoted violently and, at 20 mph or so, I slammed into the pavement. The left hip hit first and the then the head impacted hard into the asphalt. The bike spun and we pitched into a 5 foot deep ditch with a foot of water or so in it. Not sure if I lost any consciousness but as soon as I realized the bike and I were sitting in water I grabbed the top tube with my left hand and, with blood pouring off my face, scrambled up the bank. I knew it was not a good situation when I got back to the road and texted my wife to call 911 for an ambulance. My left hip really hurt and both hands were numb. With prior C5-C6 cervical fusion that really bothered me. 7 hours later the numbness has finally gotten better.

In the end, I got my first ever ride in an ambulance. Those guys did a great job warming me up. Lying on cold asphalt and partially wet I was shaking pretty fierce. I was still able to crack some jokes in the hospital with the staff. I have 3 stitches above the left eye, mild concussion, a fractured pelvis and am really, really sore. I've never been through 15 rounds with Mike Tyson but I'm pretty sure it probably feels about as bad as I feel now. Non-weight bearing for awhile so I'll just have to get ready for 2021.

I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. It's just not right.

I hope your neighbor does right by you and takes responsibility for not keeping his dog under control.
If not, well I have a water bottle that you may want to consider using.
Not trying to "feed your flesh" but sometimes, a remedy may be required.
