Who's more pretentious - someone who wears clothes specifically designed to function well for their sport, or someone who doesn't but looks down on those who do?

Pretentious is the guy wearing jeans, a sweatshirt, and work boots while passing me on a long steep climb, riding an ebike. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Heck, I own an ebike, but I wear full Lycra while on it dammit.

Have you not learned from this thread (and others) that unless you are riding a recumbent while wearing rugby shorts and a t-shirt you are doing it all wrong?

I file this topic under "you do you". There are clothes out there that will keep your bum happy, the sweat wicked away, keep you warm, keep sun from your eyes, keep sun off your arms, all manner of wonderful things. All offered in a variety of colors and forms.
If somebody is willing to undergo lots of physical pain due to what they choose to wear just to look a certain way, that's on them. No matter what that is.
Next?

I'm a clyde, and I wear lycra, so it's pretty obvious I agree with you. I ride for me, not others. I just try to match colors... but there have been times my wife will look at me and ask, "You're wearing THAT?"

I generally wear a jersey and regular, though wicking fabric, shorts when I ride trails in warm weather conditions. I like the jerseys for the pockets. I also use a chamois padded liner. I do own a pair of MB shorts I bought to check out the style. I do like that the pockets are designed to not drop their contents while riding. Otherwise and activity shorts.
During colder weather I’ve been wearing Lands End “Active” pants. They wick and dry fast. If it’s cold I’ll wear thermals then the slacks.

Yea. I owned and rode a recumbent trike for a few months recovering from surgery. I started off wearing lightweight cargo and gym shorts and they indeed caught the wind if I was going fast (which is downhill only on a recumbent trike... did hit 40 mph a couple of times!). I switched to my lycra bike shorts and/or my regular skiing "tights" (loose-ish, but not wind-flappy). For the top, the shirts and and wind jackets I wear for other activities aren't too flappy even though they're made for running, hiking and xc skiing, not riding. So they worked fine. I had to wear some sort of visor (which I don't need on a bike) and used my wife's visor.

I'm so pretentious that I even color-coordinate my bike and kit.

Form follows function.
Just remember, form follows function. Determine what function your clothes should perform, then choose the clothing accordingly.

True pretentiousness is buying the best high end kit and not having a clue how to ride a bike. Very similar to people who buy the most expensive ski gear but only hang out in the lodge.
