Have not ridden 25 miles since Jimmy Carter was president...
One beautiful day in October, I realized my 6 year old daughter was still nervous riding her bike, even with training wheels on it. My daughter? Nervous on a bike? I grew up on bikes. We rode everywhere. My father used to ride me the twenty blocks to school on the crossbar of his peugeot before riding 80 more blocks to work... in New York City. And we rode for fun, on weekends. I was 13 in my first race. I gave up racing due to illness 5 years later after spending a year struggling to regain my form. I gave up riding completely in 1977. It was not fun anymore.
We got my daughter a bike a year ago. She's only ridden it a dozen times, mostly on uneven sidewalks. She's never even seen her dad ride a bike. Why shouldn't she be nervous???
I've dragged my old bikes around with me for more than 35years now. We live on a road that is not safe for children to ride on, so I decided to get one of those third wheel things for my daughter that attach to the seat post of an adult bike. The emotional termoil involved in restoring one of my bikes to a rideable condition has been terrible. And taking forever... So I bought one on eBay and now we are just waiting (my daughter is excited as heck) for a day warm enough to ride. Also bought my wife one for Christmas. She's been asking for 2 years...

Very excited for you and your daughter! Wishing you many memory-filled fun rides together. I think it's very symbolic for you and your daughter to start your adventures together.
I say bundle yourselves up (why wait for warmer weather) and find a park that's close to a hot cocoa place and ride around for awhile, then cap off the time over a shared hot cocoa.
Welcome to BF! Be sure to post about your ride when you & your daughter adventure out, so we can cheer you on!

Thanks all, and we will give it a try when the weather gets "warmer" (meaning above 45 and sunny). I don't want her to freeze her face off or be so bundled up she can't pedal easily. Thanks, good suggestion to go to the local hot cocoa joint. We live on one of the busiest cycling roads in the nyc area (River Rd in Grandview) and the local coffee shop is always filled with cyclists. We'll be the ones with the orange and white "trail a bike" attached to the old racing bike.
