If you or a prospective buyer was wanting to keep the Turbo close to original but need more gearing, Suntour made a long cage version of that RD. It's rare and costly. The cage, though is the same as the one on some of their MTB RDs of the same time period. The only difference is where the stop bolt/screw is. You have to drill/tap a new hole then move the bolt/screw. Otherwise, it's an easy swap onto the standard RD. I have the drill/tap someone could borrow if they wanted to do that.

WOW is right. If you can only have one bike, IMO, the 86 IM is the one to have. Looking forward to its evolution. I had to sell mine which had excellent paint and shifters that still worked. I had to sell it because that 86 Classic IM was all I was riding and the custom that my wife got me as a gift and cost her 70 times what I paid for the IM, was just hanging around looking pretty.

Question for the board. What is the TT length on a 54cm IM? I might have a project in the works. I'm thinking forward to next year and the possible meetup at the Hotter N Hell. My brother that lives in the WF area called me up last week and said he and his wife were getting into cycling. They bought some MTBish bikes to ride the trails and gravel in the area. I was thinking about what bike I would ride at the HNH. I was going to give the bike to the bro after so he would have a roadie to ride. He is 5'11", however. My possibilities are:
Find a 54 and fix it up for the ride. It would be too small for the brother, though. I couldn't give it to him and would have to ship it back.
Do the same for a 56. I have the 56cm 86 red/white beater. The bro is a professional FF. He doesn't have the long ape arms like I do. A 56 might work for him.
What does IM nation think? You think the 56 is a good size for a 5'11" rider?

Methinks two stems are in order here, and building with long enough cables to go with a stem change after you ride.
So, to make it simple, I have a 56cm Turbo. I can make it yours.
You build it for you, ride it, modify it for your brother and leave it.
Or take 2 bikes.
We'd forgive you not riding an Ironman because, well, it's a Turbo.
A short stem for you and a longer one for your brother?
You could go quill and re-do one side of the bars to swap, or a quill adapter and just swap modern stems.

It's not the TT length I am worried about. I think that can be worked out. I have a Zoom adjustable stem I could use. Or I could put one of those threadless headsets on like on the IM up thread. The issue would be if a 56 ST is to short. Anyway, we have time. Here's the good news if it happens. They have some acreage in the country. We can probably have a big a$$ shindig at their house instead of settling on a restaurant. They like to host.

BTW, you need to send some OOH-RAH mojo my way. I have the MCM virtual tomorrow. Then the Richmond Marathon on 11/7 instead of the 14th. I bought some cheapish SPD shoes/pedals to try out. I can't really start testing them until I get through the marathon stretch. I'll see how they work after that.

That's motivation right there! That's what I was looking for. I think I'm ready now. I did have to go through West Point and Christchurch Va earlier this week. I could feel Chesty's presence. In Christchurch there seemed to be a faint, haunting "one more" coming from somewhere.

The stock seatpost has the numbering on it, seems to be CM of insertion left. I'm at "1".
I think the adjustable stem is a great idea. Between that and the post you've got quite a bit of adjustment. And someone coming from a MTB might want the bars higher and closer.

His entire family has been bike-centric since he was a kid. Now he is 38 & we were evenly matched for a few years when he was out of shape.
He and my daughter started doing spin classes three and four times a week two years ago.
That was bad enough.
Then they acquired a Peloton bike a year ago and have been using it four and five times weekly.
Now I struggle to get ahead of him.
On the other hand, I’m 31 years older.
So...there’s that.
His entire family has been bike-centric since he was a kid. Now he is 38 & we were evenly matched for a few years when he was out of shape.
He and my daughter started doing spin classes three and four times a week two years ago.
That was bad enough.
