Dura-Ace hubs

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dura-Ace hubs

I’m looking at 2 wheelsets that are essentially the same, except for the hubs. One set has 7900 hubs, while the other set has 9000 hubs. Aside that the 7800 only does 10 speed, while the 9000 will do 11 speed, is there any compelling reason to get one over the other? Finish wise the 7800 is polished and the 9000 is black.

IIRC 7800 had that orphan rear hub with the tall aluminium splines, that didn't use the cassette body as a stressed member, unlike every other Shimano freehub. If it's one of those, I'd definitely avoid it.

The later hubs also have oversized ally axles with a fancy indexed bearing preload adjustment, which I'm fairly sure would be exempt from the usual question mark over cup and cone hubs of whether they were ever properly adjusted.

My bad, 7900 hubs, not 7800. Edited original post.
