I feel like I'm asking a Scot what (if anything) he wears under hils kilt, but I'm curious.
Just sayin'

I think it's a legitimate question. Been discussed lots of times here before, and lots of reasons put forward both ways. I just happen to fall in the Numquam ubi sub ubi camp, at least as it relates to bike shorts.

Scottish Traditional Song goes :
1. What's the use of wearing braces, Hats and spats and shoes with laces
Vests and coats you buy in places Down on Brompton Road?
What's the use of shirts of cotton, Studs that always get forgotten?
Such affairs are simply rotten; Better far is Woad!
Woad's the stuff to show, men! Woad to scare your foemen!
Boil it to a brilliant blue, And rub it on your legs and your abdomen!
Ancient Britons never hit on Anything as good as Woad to fit on
Neck and knees, and where you sit on; Tailors, you be blowed.
2. Romans came across the channel, All dressed up in tin and flannel;
Half a pint of Woad per man'll Clothe us more than these!
Saxons, ye may save your stitches, Building beds for bugs in britches;
We have Woad to clothe us, which is Not a nest for fleas.
Romans, save your armor -- Saxons, your pajamas!
Hairy coats were made for goats, Gorillas, yaks, retriever dogs, and llamas!
So march on Snowdon with your Woad on; Never mind if you get rained or snowed on --
Never need a button sewed on! W-O-A-D, Woad!

A very thin coat of Bag Balm where friction may be an issue. A dime sized blob is more than enough..........

Nothing, the shorts ARE the base layer. You might as well ask what I wear under my bathing suit.

For the longest time I didn't any. Then every once in a while I got some hot spots(not the good kind) on the seem line of some shorts. Then a little with other shorts. Now if I don't grease up, I'll get chafing almost every ride.
Chamois Butt'r is my favorite.
Have you tried the European style?
As to the OP's question, nothin.
Unless it's really cold, then a base layer under the tights.

In the warm months a little corn starch powder.
This is asked all too often. The Underwear Nazi always had the right answer.

I do not usually ride more than 40 miles at a time and I have not found a need for anything under the short so far....if I went further I might find I need one of the "butters" but not so far.

The only chafing I've had resulted from older vintage bike shorts worn under running tights and bunching up a little. When I wear compression skivvies under whatever, no bunching or chafing occurs. Haven't tried butter.

Nothing comes between me and my shorts, except for some Beljum Budder skin lubricant.

They are designed to be worn with nothing underneath. Wearing any type of Fruit-of-the-Loom underwear is an invitation to chafing and sores.
On a more fun note, it does tend to make people wonder..
